The undefeated St. Albert Fury will touch down at Johnny Bright Park in Sunday’s bantam Tier 3 final in the Capital District Minor Football Association.
Kickoff between the Fury (8-0) and Wetaskiwin Warriors (6-2) is 10 a.m. and admission is $5.
In the season opener the Fury defeated the Warriors 32-26 in St. Albert.
In semifinal action Sunday in Spruce Grove, the Warriors exploded for multiple touchdowns in the second half to defeat the St. Albert 49ers (6-2) 40-13 and the Fury whipped the Fort Saskatchewan Lightning (4-4) 48-6.
The Fury were led by Jesse Stuht’s 155 yards on 12 carries and three TDs, plus six tackles and one interception.
Damen Murley generated 150 yards on four carries for two TDs. He also recorded four tackles.
Adam Bochar returned a fumble to the house and made nine tackles.
Colton Samuelson also had a sack and eight tackles.
The Morinville Jets soared to their eighth win in 12 games Sunday against the Wetaskiwin Icemen in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Travis Geislinger tallied twice and Tyler Hagel sniped his CJHL-leading 17th goal in the 6-2 decision at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Brandon Duboc, Travis McLauchlin and Craig Hills also scored and Boe Geslinger and Branden Domoslai picked up two assists apiece against the Icemen (2-8-1).
Shots were 40-25 for the Jets and Mike Brown was in net.
Tuesday the Jets (8-3-1) were in Beaumont to play the Chiefs (2-7-2) but the score was unavailable at press time.
The next home game is Sunday versus the Stony Plain Flyers (5-5) at 6:45 p.m.
The Devon Barons spoiled the party for the Morinville Kings in Saturday’s home opener in the North Central Hockey League.
The two-time defending NCHL champions built up a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes en route to the 4-2 decision at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Dalen Paul and Riley Miller scored for the Jets.
Devon (3-1) was 0-for-8 on the power play and the Kings were 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Jets were outshot 38-37 despite a 22-11 margin for the home team in the third. Curtis Ronaldson (1-1, 2.62 GAA) was tagged with the loss.
Prior to the puck drop the Kings raised their 2014 Hockey Alberta provincial senior A banner to the rafters.
The night before the Kings doubled the Whitecourt Wild 6-3 in Mayerthorpe.
Riley Miller and Tim Nolte potted a pair each and Shane O’Neill and Glendon Macklem notched singles in the penalty-filled affair against the Wild (0-3).
Aaron Baumgartner, Joshua Lafleche and O’Neill chipped in with two assists apiece.
Chris Sharkey posted the win in net.
Miller is the team’s top scorer with four goals and is the co-leader with O’Neill in points with five apiece. Miller is also the penalty minute leader with 22.
Saturday the Kings (2-1) host the Wild at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday they visit the Edson Ice (2-1) at 3:30 p.m.
Erin McLeod was credited with several acrobatic saves in keeping the score respectable in Saturday’s friendly between Canada and the reigning women’s World Cup soccer champions from Japan.
Japan outshot Canada 9-7 and all nine shots were on net in the 3-0 victory in front of 9,654 fans at Commonwealth Stadium.
It was part of the buildup to the 2015 World Cup, which Canada will open with a pair of matches in Edmonton. The tournament will feature 24 countries with matches scheduled for six cities across Canada.
McLeod, 31, was born in St. Albert but never attended school here. The two-time Olympian lists Calgary as her hometown and is a product of the Calgary minor soccer system, including eight years with the Willow Ridge Carburn Soccer Club.
The member of the 2012 Olympic bronze medallists played her college soccer at Southern Methodist and Penn State.
She currently plays for the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League and is a Right To Play ambassador.
