Cam Leverman of St. Albert is punching his ticket to South Korea as part of the Canadian men’s coaching staff for the 2015 World University Summer Games.
It’s the first international assignment for the head coach of the MacEwan Griffins and former Paul Kane High School teacher.
The 28th annual universiade games are July 3 to 14 in Gwangju.
The roster of Canadian Interuniversity Sport players will be announced in the spring.
In 2013 Canada placed seventh out of 15 countries and the best-ever result was fourth place in 2007.
This is Leverman’s 12th season with the Griffins, a CIS newcomer in Canada West this year.
The 2013 recipient of the Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year awards is a Coaches of Canada member who has coaching experience with Team Alberta, as well as Southwest and the Strikers at club nationals.
It wasn’t textbook perfect but the Paul Kane Blues passed Wednesday’s test against the Memorial Marauders in metro Edmonton high school junior football.
The sloppy 42-21 result in Spruce Grove evened Paul Kane’s record at 1-1 in the pool B standings.
The Blues struck first on the opening drive with a three-yard plunge by fullback Jamison Enger.
After a four-yard touchdown run by Enger early in the fourth quarter the worm turned as shoddy tackling by the Blues allowed the Marauders to pull even at 14 with two TDs before halftime.
A spirited halftime pep talk lit a fire under the Blues. Although the tackling was still suspect for most of the game the defence settled down to hold the Marauders to one TD.
On offence Anthony Beaulieu fired TD passes of 25 yards to Frederick Jolicoeur and 33 yards to Alden Young and Keaton Zaychkowsky ran 35 yards to pay dirt.
Zaychkowsky, who missed most of the third quarter with breathing issues after a nasty shot to the throat area, added a 65-yard pick-six late in the game.
It was the first game for the Marauders, based in Stony Plain as the junior team for the Carr division one Spruce Grove Panthers, after coming off a bye week, while the Blues dropped a 27-26 decision to the St. Joseph Saints (2-0) last week in St. Albert. Zaychkowsky, a bantam product of the St. Albert Fury, finished the loss with 213 yards on eight carries and one TD.
Tuesday the Blues huddle up against the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (0-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Clarke Park.
