PREMIER CHAMPIONS – Noah Cunningham and Zach Rochat display the Alberta Soccer Association premier men’s championship trophy the FC Edmonton Academy team won last weekend in Edmonton. With the St. Albert Impact products in the lineup FC Edmonton Academy finished 4-0 at provincials after placing first overall in the Edmonton District Soccer Association’s premier table. This was the first season FC Edmonton Academy played under the St. Albert Impact label.

St. Albert and Sturgeon County athletes finished the recent ITU World Triathlon Grand Final at Hawrelak Park with fast times and top placings in the standard and sprint distances.

James Dean raced in the 35-39 male age group and completed both triathlon events after placing 12th overall as the third-fastest Canadian in the aquathlon (750-metre swim and 4.6-kilometre run) in 30 minutes and 54 seconds.

Dean also placed seventh in the sprint (750m swim, 20-km bike and five-km run) as the second-highest Canadian finisher in one hour, six minutes and 45 seconds and was 10th in the standard (1.5-km swim, 40-km bike and 10-km run) as the fifth-best Canadian at 2:06:45.

In the 30-34 female standard Lisa Ulrich was the No. 1 Canadian with a fifth-place time of 2:14:24.

Results of local competitors in the sprint and standard age groups are as follows.

Livingston, Catherine Roberts and Gannon-Dean also went the distance in the aquathlon.

Livingston was 11th (first Canadian) in 50-54 males at 33:40, Roberts placed seventh (first Canadian) in 65-69 females at 49:00 and Gannon-Dean finished 21st (eighth Canadian) in 35-39 females at 39:16.

A pair of St. Albert Impact products shared in the success of the FC Edmonton Academy team at the Alberta Soccer Association championships.

Noah Cunningham and Zach Rochat, high school age players with FC Edmonton Academy, contributed to the 4-0 run by the premier men’s squad for provincial gold last weekend in Edmonton.

The Edmonton District Soccer Association pennant winners pumped in 15 goals and allowed only two in the tournament after blanking Brothers United 5-0 in the final.

It was the 11th win in a row for FC Edmonton Academy, unbeaten in 20 matches since its only loss of the season, a 3-0 forfeit May 1 in the premier fixtures.

FC Edmonton Academy also knocked off Brothers United, the No. 2 Calgary team at provincials, 5-1 in the four-team round robin.

This was FC Edmonton Academy’s first season under the St. Albert Impact label after buying the Impact 1 team’s spot in premier before the start of the EDSA campaign.

The St. Albert Cardinals fielded a team at the Alberta Amateur Baseball Council’s fifth annual 13 & 14 Extravaganza Tournament and finished third overall last weekend in Okotoks.

In the round robin the Cardinals defeated the Calgary Longhorns 5-3 and Okotoks Red Dawgs 17-2 and in a nail-bitter lost 5-4 to the Fort McMurray Oil Giants.

In the third-place playoff the Cardinals beat the East Central Bulls 9-5.

The Cardinals’ lineup featured first-year bantams from this past summer and graduating peewee players. Some of the players are also involved in the St. Albert Minor Baseball Association’s fall ball program.
