The medal haul by St. Albert and area athletes at the Alberta Summer Games last weekend in Airdrie was highlighted by the gold-medal winning performance of the Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) baseball team.
Six players from the bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals – Peter Corrigan, Colton Girard, Tylor Jans, Cole Seitz, Ross Supruniuk, Danny Tkachyk – and the team’s coaching staff – dugout boss Dave Maguire, pitching coach Fred Mills, third-base coach Kurtus Millar and first-base coach John Tkachyk – contributed to the team’s 5-0 record. The tournament was played on midget diamond dimensions.
Zone 5 posted victories of 21-1 against Zone 1 (Lethbridge/Medicine Hat region, but the Little League playoffs were staged on the same weekend so most of the zone’s better players were not in Airdrie), 3-1 against Zone 3 (consisting of 10 players from Okotoks Black, the No. 1 ranked team at the bantam AAA Tier I provincials this weekend at Legion Memorial Park), 10-1 against Zone 8 (Grande Prairie region), 10-6 in the crossover playoffs against Zone 4 (Red Deer and Camrose region) after falling behind 5-0 and in the gold-medal game 12-2 against Zone 3.
Corrigan was solid defensively in centre-field, Girard played a strong role in a utility capacity, Jans was the winning pitcher in game one and closed out the final while holding the infield together at shortstop, Seitz was the winning pitcher in the semifinal with a very good relief effort, Supruniuk played first base while banging out timely hits and running the basepaths with passion and Tkachyk was outstanding at catcher.
