The peewee A St. Albert Rams are guaranteed a provincial berth when they run the floor tonight in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council final.
Ball drop is 8:30 p.m. against the Edmonton Warriors or Edmonton Blues at Kenilworth Arena.
The Rams are 3-0 in the playoffs after placing fifth in league play.
As league finalists the Rams will compete at the July 4 to 6 provincials in Leduc.
The St. Albert Drillers are in Okotoks this weekend for the junior B female provincial lacrosse championship.
In the three-team tournament draw the Drillers play the Axemen at 8:30 p.m. Friday and the Saints at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The top two teams meet in Sunday’s final at 11 a.m.
The winner advances to the Alberta female tournament the following weekend in Edmonton. The junior B, junior A and senior champions and host team will compete for the Alberta crown.
In league play, which included interlocking schedules with two junior A and three senior teams, the Calgary Axemen placed first at 8-6-1, followed by the Drillers at 7-8 and the Capital Region Saints at 6-9.
Last weekend with first place on the line in junior B the Drillers fell 12-6 to the Axemen at Akinsdale Arena.
With only nine runners the Drillers trailed 4-1 after the first period and 8-3 after two periods.
Captain Brooke Huber sniped four goals and Janelle Wilk added a pair and one assist.
Saturday the St. Albert Stars travel to Fort McMurray to tackle the Monarchs in the Alberta Football League.
Kickoff is 6 p.m. at TC Park.
The Stars are 1-2 in league play and 2-2 overall after losing 26-10 to the Calgary Wolfpack last weekend. The expansion Monarchs are 1-1.
In Calgary the Wolfpack scored on their first play from scrimmage with a 26-yard touchdown pass.
After Korey Johnson kicked a 32-yard field goal the Wolfpack added 12 more points to lead 19-3 at halftime.
An early touchdown by the Wolfpack after the break made it 26-3.
On the ensuing kick off Terrance Williams returned the ball 106 yards for the Stars’ only TD of the night.
The St. Albert Crude have lost three in a row after winning 11 straight while going unbeaten in 12 games in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Last weekend the 2013 junior B Tier 1 provincial finalists suffered losses on the road of 8-7 to the Calgary Shamrocks and 15-8 to the Red Deer Rampage.
Saturday the Shamrocks (4-10) outscored the Crude 4-2 in the third period snap a nine-game losing streak.
Derek Burak potted a pair and Simon Hansen, Cam Ellingson, Travis Poseluzny, Joe Fowler and Lucas Roberts also scored. Cody Stannard added three assists.
Sunday in Blackfalds the Crude (11-3-1) failed to score in the third period after falling behind 10-8 to the Rampage (10-5-1) after two periods. It was 5-5 entering the middle frame
Jacob Dion tallied twice, Stannard recorded one goal and three assists, Burak chipped in with one goal and two assists and captain Erik Turner, who didn’t play against the Shamrocks, had two goals and two assists. Eric Hardinge and Ellingson netted singles.
The Crude have five games left, including two at Akinsdale Arena, until the playoffs start to declare the provincial rep for the Founders’ Cup national championship, Aug. 18 to 24 in Halifax.
Saturday the Crude visit the Calgary Chill (10-5) at 6:30 p.m. at Brentwood Arena.
