The Paul Kane Blues kick off the metro Edmonton division two men’s soccer playoffs today against the Lillian Osborne Legends.
Game time is 4:15 p.m. at Salisbury field.
In pool A the Blues finished 4-0 with 20 goals scored and only two against.
The Legends placed second in pool B at 2-0-2.
The semifinals go Monday and the final is 4 p.m. Tuesday at the ESA Complex.
Last year the Blues captured the metro city conference division two championship while going 4-4-1 overall. It was the fourth men’s soccer banner in school history and the first since winning the 2008 city title.
The St. Albert Crude remains unbeaten this season entering Saturday’s showdown against the junior B Tier 1 provincial lacrosse champions.
Ball drop against the Calgary Mountaineers is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last year the Mountaineers swept the Crude in the best-of-five provincial final.
The Mountaineers went on to finish second at the Founders’ Cup national championship in Winnipeg.
This year the Crude are 8-0-1 in the north and the Mountaineers are 5-1 in the south.
Last weekend the Crude defeated the Saskatoon-based Saskatchewan Swat 11-4 in St. Albert and the Red Deer Rampage 8-7 in overtime in Red Deer to extend their winning streak to eight games.
Mathew Meek-White’s hat-trick against the Swat included two of the team’s three shorthanded markers.
Captain Erik Turner, Dyllan Dokken and Derek Burak tallied twice and Tyler Turner and Eric Hardinge also scored.
The Swat (5-4) failed to score against netminder Troy Boucher in the first and third periods. Boucher was also credited with four assists.
The Crude led 4-0 after the first period and 7-4 after two periods.
In the next game against the Rampage (5-4-1), Erik Turner fired the equalizer with 19.9 seconds on the clock – one of four Crude power-play goals in the win – and in overtime the Cornell Big Red player converted a penalty shot for his third goal of the game after the home team was whistled for too many men.
Cody Stannard also sniped two of his three goals on the power play. He added three assists and Turner also had three helpers.
Dokken potted a pair and picked up three assists.
Period scores were 4-4 after the first and 7-4 for the Rampage after the second. In net was Bruce Ingraham.
Sunday the Crude play the Rockyview Silvertips (1-8) at 3 p.m. in Airdrie.
The St. Albert Drillers are winless in three games after losing twice in Calgary last weekend in the Rocky Mountain female lacrosse league.
The junior B Drillers are 5-5 following losses of 17-5 to the senior Calgary Cougars (4-1-1) and 11-4 to the junior B Calgary Axemen (3-5).
Tonight the Drillers play the junior B Capital Region Saints (3-5) at 8:30 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.
Against the Cougars the Drillers fell behind 5-1 after the opening 20 minutes and 14-4 after two periods.
Brooke Huber, Shanya Shwetz, Charleigh Kondas, Laura Cormier and Kennedie Wolosyn scored in the loss.
Injuries, including a concussion to Wolosyn, and a short bench against the Axemen left the Drillers with only seven runners at one point compared to 18 for the opposition.
The Drillers trailed 6-3 after the first and 10-3 entering the third.
Marie-Eve Gautier tallied twice and Wolosyn and Kondas also scored.
