St. Albert resident Serge Lajoie returns to the University of Alberta Golden Bears as the hockey team's 24th head coach.
The former St. Albert Saint and Golden Bears' defenceman replaces Ian Herbers, who was hired by the Edmonton Oilers as an assistant coach after leading the U of A to CIS national championships in 2014 and 2015.
Lajoie spent the last five seasons as the head coach of the NAIT Ooks, winners of the 2013 and 2015 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference titles.
The ACAC coach of the year the past two campaigns had previously served as an assistant coach for the Golden Bears during their 2006 and 2008 championship seasons.
Lajoie joined the Golden Bears in 1988 and in five seasons racked up 141 points, including 105 assists in 198 games. He celebrated a national championship in 1992 and the next season, his last with the Golden Bears, was awarded the Mervyn “Red” Dutton Trophy as the Canada West defenceman of the year, the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Trophy as the Canadian university's men's hockey player of the year, while recording 50 points in 45 games, and the Wilson Challenge Trophy as the U of A male athlete of the year.
After university Lajoie played five seasons in the German First Division with EC Bad Nauheim and compiled 165 points and 401 penalty minutes in 203 games.
Lajoie has also coached in St. Albert minor hockey system and at the provincial and national level.
The third annual J.R. Patrick Classic 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament hoops it up Aug. 8 to 9 at Servus Credit Union Place.
The registration deadline is Aug. 5 and the entry fee is $150 per team.
The age divisions are male or female 10-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-plus and 18-plus elite.
