The Paul Kane Blues will scrum down for the metro Edmonton division two women’s rugby championship Thursday against the Harry Ainlay Titans.
Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The Blues are 4-1 and Ainlay is 5-0.
The only loss for the Blues was 24-19 against Ainlay in pool A action May 5.
In Monday’s semifinals the Blues beat the McNally Tigers (4-1) 29-5 and Ainlay downed the Beaumont Bandits (3-2) 25-22.
The Blues led 10-0 in the first quarter on tries by Kendall Dewitt and Nicole Schlemko but the big play was Sydney DeLaMare tracking down a runaway Tiger in front of Paul Kane’s 22-metre line and then stealing the ball when the match was still scoreless.
In the second quarter Ashley Barchuk converted Schlemko’s try under the posts.
The Blues made it 22-0 in the third quarter on a long run by DeLaMare.
Before the quarter ended the Tigers scored a try.
Madi Dale’s try and Barchuk’s conversion rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Dan Holowaychuk will be inducted into the St. Albert Curling Club’s wall of fame on Saturday night.
The St. Albert resident and valuable alternate for the Ferbey Four during their historical run of provincial, Brier and world championships will join Hec Gervais, Don McKenzie, Cathy King, Jackie Rae Greening, Marc Kennedy and Ferbey Four rinkmate Scott Pfeifer on the star-studded wall of fame in the Friendly Giant Lounge.
The ceremony starts at 8:30 p.m.
Holowaychuk, the 1989 men’s Tournament of Champions winner curling out of St. Albert, has competed in countless provincials over his career. Last year in the 50-plus senior ranks he played second for the Wade White rink of St. Albert, the Alberta champions and national bronze medallists.
The St. Albert Miners remain undefeated in senior B lacrosse after Graedon Cornfield scored in overtime to knock off the Rockyview Knights 6-5 Sunday afternoon in Airdrie.
Cornfield’s second goal of the game and league-high 18th of the season extended the Miners’ winning streak to five games. His 28 points also lead the scoring race.
Steve Tessarola, John Lintz, Chris Schmidt and captain Nate Schmidt scored in support of netminder Dave Marrese.
Nate’s goal with 51 seconds remaining forced the sudden-death period. He also assisted on four goals, including Cornfield’s winner.
The Knights (2-3) led 3-2 in the first (the team’s third goal was scored with one tick on the clock) but trailed 4-3 entering the third.
The teams combined for a whopping 29 minors in the tightly officiated contest.
Tonight at 8 p.m. the Miners host the winless Spruce Grove Slash at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Tonight the St. Albert Drillers entertain the Sherwood Park Titans in junior female lacrosse.
Game time is 9 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The junior B Drillers are 5-2 after Saturday’s 14-1 drubbing of the winless senior Red Deer Rage in St. Albert. The Drillers scored 12 unanswered goals after the Rage beat netminder Morgan Crough with 6:52 gone in the opening period.
The junior A Titans are 6-0. They beat the Drillers 10-4 early in the season in Sherwood Park.
