The St. Albert Miners Senior B lacrosse team is on a roll. They are currently ranked first place in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. They are facing off against the Rockyview Knights on Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. in Airdrie, and host the Spruce Grove Slash at Northstar Hyundai Arena on Wednesday, May 28, at 8 p.m. The Spruce Grove Slash are currently in last place, having gone 0-3 in the first few games of their season – where the Miners have had a strong start with 3-0.

Graedon Cornfield with the Miners leads the team in goals, with 12 scores in three games. Sean Reid leads with 18 assists in three games. Both players are top of the league in player statistics, which includes both goals scored and assists made. Six of the 10 top players in the league, currently, are Miners.

The St. Albert Drillers played the Edmonton Saints Wednesday, May 21, and managed to pull out a win, despite a slower start to their game. The team was confident going into the game, following a couple of good practices, a rest over the long weekend, and a full bench. At the end of the first period, the girls were down 5-3.

The team came out firing on all cylinders in the second period, and came out on top, 10-7. While focusing on defence in the third period, the Drillers once again outscored the Saints, 2-1, winning the game, 12-8. The girls play Saturday, May 24, at 1:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena against the Red Deer Rage.

The U15 Boys St. Albert Spiders won the consolation final at the Swoosh Basketball Tournament over the long weekend. The Spiders won four out of five games in the round robin, and made a tremendous comeback in the final game, from a 24-point hole, in the first half. The boys ended up beating out their Calgary opponents to win the consolation final.

The Bellerose Bulldogs and the AOB Crusaders saw a little pre-season action Thursday night. The Bulldogs started the game off with a bang, taking the lead at the end of the first quarter, 8-0. The first touchdown was a dual effort by Morgan Sherban and Seth Waselenchuk pass and run, along with strong blocking by Bellerose. The play was followed by Sherban’s two-point conversion.

The second touchdown was a long drive by Trace Stuht, giving Mitch Kruk, running back, a short touchdown run. The two-point conversion was stopped short of the goal line, leaving the score at 14-0 at the half.

Much of Bellerose’s success is attributed to linebackers Josh Coogan and Nick Cowan, and defensive ends John Copmeau and Jacob West.

AOB scored late in the fourth quarter, leaving the game with Bellerose, 14-8.
