The Tim Hortons Canadian Ringette Championships are in full swing in Regina for St. Albert and area players.
The national competition features 42 teams in the U16 and U19 AA divisions and National Ringette League playoff tournament.
Six of the 16 teams in U16 hail from Alberta and the following teams have local players.
St. Albert Mission: goalies Cassidy Platz and Emily Mehok, defencemen Dana Koroluk, Madison Darda, Sydney DeLaMare, Jordan Yost and Danielle Petter and forwards Kara Harris, Emma Howard, Katelynn Shigeta, Maddy Sanders, Haley Groenenboom, Sloan Yaceyko, Loren Gunputrav, Megan Shigeta and Katherine Corrigan.
Zone 5 Zeal: goalie Morgan Ryce, defenceman Madeleine Lovsin and forward Taylor Ostafichuk.
At the U16 AA provincials Calgary Edge placed first, Calgary Koda was second and Central Alberta Sting finished third and all three teams are competing at nationals.
Alberta is represented by four U19 teams in the 18-team division and the following three teams consist of local representation.

Calgary, Edmonton and St. Albert finished one-two-three in the five-team provincial U19 draw.
The NRL tournament is comprised of eight teams, including Calgary RATH and Edmonton WAM! St. Albert goalie Anj Grewal and defenceman Jillian Basterash are WAM! players.

The 25th annual Football Alberta Senior Bowl kicks off May 19 at Commonwealth Stadium with five St. Albert high school players on the north all-star team.
Quarterback Cory Knott and receiver Tyler Turner of the Paul Kane Blues (metro Edmonton division two champions and Tier II north finalists) and defensive linemen Jack Hanna and Jacob Neuls and defensive back Tyler Moroz of the Bellerose Bulldogs (metro division one semifinalists) were selected to the 41-man roster after last weekend’s tryouts for graduating Grade 12 players in Edmonton.
It was a banner-winning performance for the Paul Kane Blues’ cheer team in its provincial debut.
The Blues were awarded the team sportsmanship and best novice team banners at the recent Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association competition at Harry Ainlay High School.
Brendan Armstrong was also recognized by the competition hosts and the ASAA for his sportsmanship and received a commemorative pin and cheer prize.
The second-year Blues’ cheer team – three males and nine females – finished fourth overall out of six co-ed teams.
Victoria School of the Arts finished on top of the medal podium, followed by the Austin O’Brien Crusaders and Edwin Parr Predators of Athabasca.
The Blues were granted a wild card entry to provincials after placing fourth in the co-ed division at the metro Edmonton zone championships at Bellerose Composite High School.
The Alberta Shooting Stars Showcase weekend celebrated a season of excellence in girls’ basketball.
At the recent Shooting Stars banquet in Chestermere, forward Ashley Thomas of the Paul Kane Blues was honoured as the 4A rookie of the year and forwards’ Marinya Marcichiw and Brielle Wise of the provincial bronze medallist St. Albert Skyhawks shared the 4A player of the year award. Wise and Marcichiw were the 3A co-rookie of the year winners in 2013.
Alexie Pusch and Lauren Cardinal of the 24-0 Vincent J. Maloney Marauders were joint winners of the north junior high player of the year award.
Payton McNeil of the Marauders was the MVP selection in the Grade 9 prospects Blue Game at the SAIT Campus Centre and her VJM teammate, Sarah Dedrick, won a three-point shooting contest.
The prospects all-star games featured the top players in the province in Grades 9 to 11 and the senior all-star games highlighted the top Grade 12 players at the 1A/2A and 3A/4A levels.
McNeil and Dedrick were joined in the Grade 9 prospects’ games by Pusch and Cardinal.
The Grade 10 prospects included Thomas and Serena Lillo of Paul Kane, Brooke Budskin of the Bellerose Bulldogs, Carlee Nikiforuk of the Sturgeon Spirits and Aphia Ward of the Skyhawks.
Marcichiw competed in the Grade 11 prospects’ games and Rebecca Huellstrung of Bellerose and Julie Fagan of Paul Kane participated in the 3A/4A Grade 12 seniors’ games.
The Shooting Stars program was formed in 1990 to develop, showcase and promote girls’ basketball in Alberta.
