A pair of wins over the weekend has put the St. Albert Senior B Miners lacrosse in good shape heading into this weekend’s playoffs.

The Miners faced the Warriors in Edmonton on Friday night, and had a relatively easy time dispatching their opponents. The first period was a tight back-and-forth, with both teams scoring four goals. In the second, the Miners outscored the Warriors 5-1 and 6-4 in the third for a 15-9 final.

The Miners hosted the Sherwood Park Outlaws on Sunday and similarly saw a tight match early on before blowing it wide open. The Miners pulled into a 4-3 lead right at the end of the first period, then kept the momentum going in the second and third for a 12-8 final score.

The pair of wins, which follow a strong performance all season, leave the Miners in playoff contention this weekend, hosting the Raiders at Servus Place, although playoff schedules have not yet been finalized.

The St. Albert Junior B Crude split a pair of games over the weekend, winning in St. Albert 12-8 against the Sherwood Park Titans on Saturday night before falling 6-4 to the Warriors in Edmonton on Sunday.

Saturday’s match saw the Crude take an early lead and hold on to it throughout, while Sunday’s game was a back-and-forth affair. Simon Hansen scored first to give the Crude a 1-0 edge, but the Warriors answered back with two of their own.

Goals from Pat McGinley, Chris Letendre and Jacob Dion helped the Crude pull back ahead, although a late-period goal narrowed St. Albert’s lead to just one point. Unfortunately the Crude were blanked in the second and third periods, while the Warriors netted three in the second for the 6-4 final.

The SARFC premier men’s rugby team trekked south last Saturday to face the Saints in Calgary, battling them to a 27-27 tie. The men will stay in third place in the Alberta Cup league, leading the Saints by several points.

The men are back at it this weekend in St. Albert, hosting the fifth-place Calgary Canucks at the SARFC field on Saturday afternoon. Game time is 4 p.m.
