The Len Sterling rink of St. Albert qualified for the masters 60-plus provincials as the B-event winners at the Northern Alberta Curling Association playdowns Saturday.
Sterling, third Neil Fleming, second Brian Kupsch and lead Doug de Bruijn stole the winning point in the eighth and last end to defeat Fred McKenzie of the Thistle 7-6 at the St. Albert Curling Club.
In six McKenzie counted four to lead by one and in seven Sterling scored the equalizer.
In the A event Sterling needed extra ends to slip past Elson Keown 6-5, after the Thistle skip stole singles in seven and eight to extend the match, and Don Sutton of the Thistle 8-7.
In the semifinals Sterling downed Lyle Lorenz 5-3 in seven ends on the strength of steals of one in three straight ends to lead 4-0 after four.
In the final Sterling suffered a 6-4 loss to Orv MacDonald of Cold Lake. MacDonald scored three with the hammer in the first end and led 5-0 after three.
The loss dropped Sterling into the B semifinals and with the hammer in eight counted the 8-7 winner against Les Rogers of the Thistle to advance to the event final.
Fourteen rinks competed at northerns.
The winner of the Feb. 19 to 23 provincials at Jasper Place goes to nationals, March 31 to April 6 at Coaldale.
