The St. Albert Mission tween, junior and belle teams ended the 31st annual Wood Tournament on a winning note Sunday at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre. The U14AA tweens defeated the Lower Mainland Thunder 12-5 for third place in the 10-team draw.

The St. Albert Mission tween, junior and belle teams ended the 31st annual Wood Tournament on a winning note Sunday at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre.

The U14AA tweens defeated the Lower Mainland Thunder 12-5 for third place in the 10-team draw. The score after the first period was 9-3.

The Mission tweens finished 3-0-2 (34 GF/18 GA) at the Wood.

The team’s overall record is 18-3-3 and the next game is Friday versus the Edmonton Elite at 7:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

The 16AA juniors edged the Elite 3-2 for their second win in a row as Kirsten McEachern scored the only goal in the last period.

The Mission juniors are 11-8-2 overall after going 2-2-1 (16 GF/20 GA) in the tournament.

Sunday the Leduc U19A team hosts the juniors at 6:15 p.m.

The U19AA belles outscored the Central Alberta Sting 6-5 for their third consecutive win at the Wood. One of the losses was 6-5 to the Sting.

Brooklyn Foote scored twice as the Mission belles finished 3-2 (21 GF/20 GA) and their overall record is 7-9-1.

Monday the belles play Zone 5 Experience at 9:45 p.m. at Kinex Arena.

St. Albert golfer Alicia Easthope has signed a letter of intent with Montevallo University in Alabama.

The Sandpiper Golf & Country Club member will attend Montevallo in the fall with a full scholarship on the Falcons’ golf team.

Easthope, 18, closed out the 2016 season with a second-place result in the 15 to 19 division at the invitation-only Maple Leaf Golf Tour tournament in Phoenix recently.

The Bellerose Composite High School graduate and 2016 Edmonton Journal/Sportfactor female all-star volleyball team selection in the metro Edmonton league also competed at the MJT International Team Challenge in Welland, Ont., and in her junior national debut finished 42nd out of 70 golfers who made the cut in Shubenacadie, N.S.

Easthope was also the runner-up at the Edmonton Ladies Amateur as the youngest golfer in the tournament.

The St. Albert Skyhawks served up an early playoff exit at the 3A provincial women’s volleyball championship Saturday in Camrose.

Last year’s gold medallists were eliminated by the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clippers in the opening round after going 2-3 (7 GW/6 GL) for a third-place tie in pool A.

The Skyhawks lost 25-19, 21-25, 7-15.

The Clippers, ranked No. 3 in the 12-team draw, were 4-1 (8 GW/3 GL) for second place in pool B. The Clippers went on to win bronze.

The Skyhawks were ranked No. 9 in the tournament as the second Edmonton reps after posting records of 5-0 at zones and 5-2 as the metro Edmonton division one quarter-finalists.

The Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles, ranked No. 2 as the top Edmonton rep as the division one finalists, finished fourth at provincials at 5-2 and both losses were in the medal round.

The St. Joseph Ceniahs of Grande Prairie, ranked No. 1, defeated the No. 5-ranked Springbank Phoenix in the gold-medal final.

In pool A, the Skyhawks lost 24-26, 25-19, 8-15 to St. Joseph and 25-22, 13-25, 7-15 to Springbank.
