Barrett Belland of St. Albert was named the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference male golfer of the year after winning his third consecutive tournament with the MacEwan University Griffins.

Belland captured the ACAC individual title by two shots over teammate Josh Gorieu after rounds of an even-par 71 and 79 last weekend at the Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club.

Belland carried a four-shot lead into the final round.

Also competing for the Griffins from St. Albert were Noah Lubberding (85-73), who tied for fourth, and Keaton Lockwood (91-97).

Belland also led the Griffins to a 53-stroke victory for the men’s team title, the fourth in six years for MacEwan.

The fifth-year commerce student was coming off victories at the north regional (73-72) at the Ravencrest Golf & Country Club and the south regional (71-72) at the Olds Golf Club.

Belland and the rest of the Griffins’ team will tee it up at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship, Oct. 18 to 21 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres remain the only undefeated team in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League after extending their winning streak to five games in a row.

Three goals and two assists by Carter Savoie highlighted Tuesday’s 9-3 throttling of the Leduc Oil Kings (0-4-1) at Akinsdale Arena.

Period scores were 2-0 and 6-1.

The Sabres tallied three times shorthanded and once on the power-play during a 61-shot onslaught.

Ethan Barwick (3-0, 1.67 GAA) stopped 17 shots.

Michael Benning, Matthew Savoie, Ethan Whillans, Drew Kuzma, Ethan Leyer and Zack Ostapchuk also potted goals and Tye Pederson, Mathieu Gautier and Matthew Reidy chipped in with two assists apiece.

In the league scoring race, Matthew Savoie was tied for fifth with 12 points and two of his seven goals were shorthanded efforts.

The Sabres have tallied more goals shorthanded (seven) than on the power play (three) this season.

Overall the team is averaging 6.2 goals scored and 1.6 against.

Sunday the Sabres host the Maple Leafs (1-3) at 5 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The St. Albert Flyers make their home debut Tuesday in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8:15 p.m. against the PAC Saints at Akinsdale Arena.

The midget 15 Flyers are 2-0 and the Saints are 3-0 to start the season.

Stuart Dovey leads the Flyers in points with six and Carson Henry is the top goal scorer with four.
