Barrett Belland of St. Albert carded the winning score at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference south regional at the Olds Golf Club last weekend.
The MacEwan University fifth-year commerce student finished one-under through two rounds to win the tournament by two shots with scores of 71 and an even-par 72 to lead the Griffins men’s team to a 36-shot victory for the team title.
Colton Leslie of Augustana University College was the runner-up with rounds of 73 and 72.
Noah Lubberding (tied for 12th at 73-83) and Keaton Lockwood (tied for 16th at 86-84) of St. Albert also competed for the Griffins.
On tap next for the Griffins is the ACAC north regional this weekend at the Ravencrest Golf and Country Club.
Connor Ackroyd of the Paul Kane Blues qualified for the Albert Schools’ Athletic Association golf championships with a score of 76 at the metro Edmonton zones Tuesday at The Links.
Ackroyd was among three individuals – two best low gross not on winning team plus any player 76 or better – at the 3A/4A tournament to advance to provincials, starting Monday in Medicine Hat.
The Paul Kane team also consisted of Aidan Steinke (96), William Joly (85) and Evan Tod (102).
The St. Albert Skyhawks were represented by Scott Lancaster (88), Cole Gupta (93), Rhys Mazur (121) and Nicholas Wood (142).
Bella Cuciz (117) of the Skyhawks was the lone St. Albert female competing at Tuesday’s all-girls’ zones at the Twin Willows Golf Course.
The St. Albert Physical Education Council serves up its annual volleyball tournament next weekend.
The draw features 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams divided into four round-robin pools to determine the playoff pairings for a total of 102 best-of-three matches.
The tournament swings into action at 2 p.m. Friday at Vincent J. Maloney and the SkyDome for the girls and Richard S. Fowler, Lorne Akins, Elmer S. Gish and Ecole Secondaire Sainte Marguerite D’Youville for the boys.
Saturday’s playoffs begin at 9 a.m. and the finals are 3:15 p.m. at the SkyDome for the girls and ESSMY for the boys.
Last year’s winners were VJM for the girls and Morinville for the boys.
Meanwhile, league play starts Oct. 6 and the Tier I city finals are Nov. 17 at Bellerose Composite High School.
The defending champions are VJM for the girls and Morinville for the boys.
The St. Albert Heavenly Rollers host Nuclear Free Roller Derby next Saturday at Servus Credit Union Place.
The Nuclear Free derby team is based out of Red Deer.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first bout goes at 7 p.m.
