Sunday’s finalists have been confirmed for the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League championships.
Mavericks 09 and the Morinville Ladies go toe-to-toe for division one honours for the third year in a row and the division two match features Cosmos FC against the Devils.
Kickoff times are 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.
The Mavericks, winners of the last two division one crowns, are 13-0 (70 GF/5 GA) after downing the St. Albert Blaze 8-3 in semifinal action.
Last year the Blaze repeated as division two champions.
Morinville is 7-4-2 (36 GF/22 GA) after doubling the Kickers 6-3 in the round of four.
The Cosmos and Devils are the top division two teams after winning their respective semifinals. The Cosmos improved to 15-0 (106 GF/25 GA) in the 6-1 win over Mavericks 95 and the Devils are 12-4 (63 GF/38 GA) following their 4-0 shutout of the Pink Ladies.
The Cosmos were division one semifinalists last year.
The Alberta Soccer Association champion St. Albert Impact U14 Tier I boys have exhibitions lined up before going to nationals, Oct. 5 to 10 at Moncton, N.B.
Sunday the Impact plays Sherwood Park Phoenix U17 at 2 p.m. in Sherwood Park.
A tentative match against the ASA REX girls’ academy is slated for Sept. 25.
The Impact has also booked the Riel turf field for Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. against an opponent to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Impact players, parents and coaches are frantically fundraising to help cover more than $30,000 needed for nationals.
The Impact are banking on next Saturday’s pub night at the Beer Hunter to assist their fundraising endeavours. Kickoff is 7 p.m. and the fun includes a silent auction, door prizes, raffles and a 50/50 draw with a maximum prize payout of $5,000.
Three hundred tickets have been printed and all ticket sales at $10 apiece go directly to the team. Ten per cent of the food and beverage sold at the event will also be donated to the Impact.
For more information, contact Impact head coach Chris Clarke at [email protected]. Corporate and business sponsors are welcome.
The Impact are the first boys’ team from St. Albert to qualify for nationals since the 1989 gold-medal winning Cougars.
The U14 nationals consist of 10 teams and the Impact are grouped with Fraser Valley of B.C., Dartmouth FC of Nova Scotia, St. John’s SC of Newfoundland and Hillsborough United of Prince Edward Island in the qualification phase.
The Brampton East Blades of Ontario, Bonivital SC of Manitoba, Eastside FC of Saskatchewan, FDSA of New Brunswick and the Yukon Strikers form the second group.
The Impact finished 14-0-2 in the Edmonton Interdistrict Youth Soccer Association and went undefeated in three matches at provincials last month in Calgary. The gold-medal final was decided on penalty kicks after 80 minutes of full time and 20 minutes of extra time for the 1-0 decision (4-3 on penalty kicks) against Foothills.
St. Albert is the fourth stop on the Destined For Greatness Tour of 10 cities in four provinces in 10 days by Canadian Wrestling’s Elite.
The St. Albert Community Hall will open its doors next Saturday for the pro wrestling spectacle and the headliner is Nick “Magnus” Aldis, the current Global Force Wrestling world champion.
Aldis is the first British competitor to hold a major world championship, a feat he accomplished twice with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
Several matches featuring Canadian-born athletes are on tap for the St. Albert show.
