The St. Albert Ringette Association is introducing a new recreational division for the upcoming season. The league will be a 16-week, non-competitive season for players born between 1998 and 2002. The games will take place on the same night every week and the format will be “sticks in the middle” resulting in even teams for each side. There will be no tournaments or practices and the league will break for Christmas and high school exams. Players cannot be registered on another SARA or SAMHA team. The St. Albert Triathlon is setting up for its 27th annual race on August 7. The race features a swim in Fountain Park followed by an out and back bike race on Sir Winston Churchill Ave. and will finish with an out and back run through the neighbourhoods surrounding the pool. The sprint distance will be a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike and five kilometre run. There is also a beginner option, the try-a-tri, for new racers featuring a 250 metre swim, 10 kilometre bike and a 2.5 kilometre run. A $120 entrance fee is required and competitors will get to take home a swag bag and celebrate with a post race barbecue. The top competitors in each age group will win awards. The race starts at 7 a.m. on August 7 to register for the race or to visit www.zone4.ca.

The Alberta Summer Games were held in Leduc from July 14 to 17 with 48 St. Albert athletes competing in a total of 126 events. Most of the athletes from St. Albert were part of the Black and Gold/Yellowhead Zone 5 along with 153 other communities from the region. Zone 5 came in fourth place with 28 gold medals, 44 silver medals and 33 bronzes. Overall the St. Albert athletes did contribute to three different zones and received 14 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 16 bronze medals in their 126 events. Amy Nelson of St. Albert, who competed for Zone 6, stood out earning seven first place finishes in all seven of her swimming events. Thomas Peschke competed for Zone 5 and brought home two gold medals in javelin and discus throw events, and placed second in the 15 and Under Male Medley Relay.
