St. Albert defenceman Jayden Platz is among 111 players invited to Hockey Canada’s national U17 development camp.
The July 26 to Aug. 2 session at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary will feature 12 netminders, 36 defencemen and 63 forwards in practices and games involving six teams.
After the camp, players will be evaluated through the early season before 66 are selected to represent Canada on one of three national teams – Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red and Team Canada White – at the 2016 World U17 Hockey Challenge, Oct. 30 to Nov. 5 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
The six-foot-two, 183-lb. Platz spent last season with the Northern Alberta Elite 15s in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League and in 37 league and playoff games combined recorded two goals, 20 points and 32 penalty minutes.
The former captain of the bantam AAA Gregg Distributors Sabres also played one game with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League.
The Oil Kings drafted Platz in round two, 33rd overall, in the 2015 WHL bantam draft.
Platz was also a member of the gold-medal winning Alberta team at the 2015 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup.
The St. Albert Rams will be represented by two players at the bantam national lacrosse championship.
Mathieu Gautier and netminder Jace Simington-Lesanko of the bantam A Rams were selected by Team Alberta for the Aug. 2 to 7 tournament in Saskatoon.
The St. Albert Crude are winless in 10 junior B Tier I games after Tuesday’s overtime loss in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The Edmonton Warriors potted four unanswered goals in the last 7:04 minutes of regulation time while out-scoring the Crude 5-2 in the third period before netting the 11-10 winner at Akinsdale Arena.
The last two goals for the Warriors (8-7-1) before overtime were power-play efforts 76 seconds apart and the tying marker was scored with 1:22 left in the period.
It was 8-5 Crude after 40 minutes after both teams scored four times in the opening frame.
Keegan Doll, affiliate Brock McIntyre and Michael Nohr tallied twice and Jesse Ott, Thomas Bartko, Noah Flink and Greyson Seibel notched singles. Flink also picked up three assists.
The Crude (3-13) are in Winnipeg for two games against the Manitoba Blizzard (11-5) this weekend.
The regular season for the Crude wraps up with games July 8 against the Red Deer Rampage (10-6-1) on the road and July 10 against the Sherwood Park Titans (13-3) at 1 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Crude are 3-6 on their home floor.
