The senior B St. Albert Miners are winners of eight in a row when they run the floor against the Edmonton Warriors tonight in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Start time is 8:30 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.
The Miners (8-0-1) beat the Warriors (3-4-1) twice this season by scores of 14-5 and 13-4.
Last weekend the Miners handed the Rockyview Knights their first loss, 13-9 in Airdrie, and posted a 7-2 win over the Calgary Mountaineers (4-3-1) at Stu Peppard Arena.
The Knights (7-1-1) and Miners battled to a 7-7 draw in the league opener in St. Albert.
Last year the Knights downed the Miners in game four of the best-of-five provincial final.
The weekend game sheets from the Miners were unavailable at press time.
The next home game for the host-team for the Presidents’ Cup national championship, Aug. 24 to Sept. 4 at the Leduc Recreation Centre, is Monday versus the Beaumont Outlaws (1-7) at 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The senior AAA St. Albert Tigers are in Sherwood Park tonight to play the Athletics in the Sunburst Baseball League.
First pitch is 7 p.m. at Centennial Park.
The Athletics (4-2) and Tigers (3-3) trail the Red Deer Riggers (4-0) in the five-team standings.
Last weekend’s Sunburst tournament, with eight of the 10 games scheduled for Henry Singer Field in Spruce Grove, saw only three games played and the rest were rained out.
Sunburst officials are deciding if the completed games will count in the standings and if the rained-out games will be rescheduled.
Tuesday the Tigers host the Riggers at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
Upcoming is the annual Tigers Baseball Association Tournament. The eight-team draw starts June 24 at 7 p.m. and ends with the final June 26 at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, veteran pitcher Craig Tomas leads the Sunburst in strikeouts (30) and innings pitched (31) and is sixth in earned-run average (3.16).
Jessy Beley (.474 average and six runs batted in) and Dan Curtis (.409 and seven RBIs) are among the top Sunburst batters. They are tied for third in hits with nine apiece.
The second division 1A win in three days for the St. Albert Rangers was Monday’s second-half explosive result against the Rising Stars in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Will Backhouse tied it at one in the opening minutes after the break, Marc Tetreau scored the go-ahead goal on a brilliant free kick, Ben Smith tallied twice and Backhouse notched his fourth of the season in the 5-1 decision at the ESA Complex.
Zach Black, the starting goalkeeper, had to be replaced at the break due to a questionable tackle two-thirds of the way through the first half and Dan Loconte was solid in the net the rest of the way against the Stars (0-5-1).
Felix Vikingsson, a newcomer to the Rangers, made a positive contribution in his first match by slotting the ball through for players making runs by defenders, as well as creating a couple of opportunities to strike at the net himself.
The Rangers (5-2) bounced back from a disappointing 3-1 loss to Africana FC (2-2-1) in Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Drillers (3-2) at the ESA Complex as Jon Mark and Dave Letourneau potted goals in the second half.
First place is on the line Monday, when the Rangers play Sherwood Park Karpaty (5-0) at 7 p.m. at Millennium Place.
Karpaty beat the Rangers 4-1 in the season opener April 30.
Golfers from the Sturgeon Valley and Sandpiper clubs made the cut at the Alberta junior and men’s open qualifiers.
Connor Ackroyd of Sturgeon Valley tied for third at plus-four with a 76 and James Robillard of the Sandpiper shared fifth place at plus-five with a 77 in the junior qualifier June 5 at the Broadmoor Golf Course in Sherwood Park.
Brody Eggleton of the Sturgeon was plus-11 at 83.
The trio were among the 23 qualifiers for the provincial junior championship, July 12 to 15 at the Cottonwood Golf & Country Club in Dewinton.
The June 7 qualifier for the provincial men’s open saw Robillard finished tied for 10th at plus-four with a 76 and Eggleton tied for 19th at plus-six with a 78 at the Barrhead Golf & Country Club.
The top 25 advance to provincials, July 19 to 22 at the Innisfail Golf Club.
The Brezovski sisters placed third in their respective age divisions at last weekend’s Canadian Junior Golf Association tournaments at the Fox Hollow course in Calgary.
Brooke, 12, carded rounds of 102 and a personal best 89 for a 36-hole total of 191 in the U15 bantam division at the CJGA tour event. The division featured three females.
Belle, 11, also shot a personal-best round of 92 in the CJGA Linkster U13 peewee division of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship Qualifier. Six females competed in the 18-hole competition.
Brooke and Belle are junior members of the Sturgeon Valley and Glendale golf clubs.
