Jamie Bain of the St. Albert Skyhawks was the best of the best as the metro Edmonton female athlete of the year.

The Grade 12 volleyball and basketball player was also the recipient of a $750 scholarship.

“I’m very honoured to be recognized for my commitment to the sports that I play and I’m thankful that I was given this title,” Bain said. “It’s a great end to my high school career.”

Bain was the setter and co-captain of the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 3A volleyball champions and metro division one finalists and in basketball was an offensive catalyst at guard/forward and team leader for the fifth-place Skyhawks at the 4A provincials and metro division one finalists.

“Winning provincials in volleyball was obviously a highlight of the season. Playing and getting a provincial banner for your school is an awesome feeling,” Bain said. “Basketball is just always super fun with all the away tournaments and spending time with my teammates is the best.”

Bain was a major contributor on the volleyball and basketball senior teams during all three years at St. Albert Catholic High School.

“I love both sports that I played throughout high school. I’m glad that I got to represent my school and bring success to the athletic programs at SACHS. I wouldn’t change a thing,” said the junior high basketball and volleyball product of the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs.

Bain, 17, will attend NAIT in the fall and will study personal fitness training while playing volleyball for the Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference team.

Bain was also named to the Edmonton Journal/Sportfactor female all-star team in basketball. She was joined by Jenell Desharnais of the Paul Kane Blues and Alexandra Runyon of the Sturgeon Spirits.

The all-star volleyball selections included Kacey Jost of the Skyhawks, Alicia Easthope of the Bellerose Bulldogs, Hannah Gorgichuk of the Blues and Emma Kiefenbeld of the Spirits on the women’s team and David Konrad of the Bulldogs and Thomas Laxdall of the Blues on the men’s team.

Anthony Borelli of the Skyhawks, Jaedon Carroll of the Bulldogs and Brendan Guy of the Blues were picked as football all-stars.

Also, the metro Tier 1 women’s basketball coach of the year award was presented to John Dedrick of the Skyhawks.

Keaton Zaychkowsky of the Paul Kane Blues made the U18 Team Alberta for the Football Canada Cup next month in Winnipeg.

Zaychkowsky is among five running backs on the 38-man roster for the national championship tournament for the top U18 high school players in the nation.

In the metro Edmonton league last year, the Grade 11 standout ranked second in rushing with 680 yards on 51 carries and in touchdowns with 15 in the Carr division one stats.

The 2014 Grant Yuzyk Trophy recipient as the pool B MVP in the metro junior league was also third in receptions with 30 and fifth in receiving yards with 395 yards.

Zaychkowsky suffered a concussion in the last game before the Carr playoffs and was unavailable for the metro final (45-6 loss to the Bev Facey Falcons) and Tier II provincial north semifinal (33-9 loss to the St. Joseph Celtics of Grande Prairie) as the Blues finished 8-3 overall.
