Gymnastics
The 2016 Canadian Gymnastics Championships will take place at the Butterdome on May 31 until June 4.
Marisa Dick of St. Albert will attend the event.
Dick, a dual citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and Canada, was pulled out of the Alberta championships in Fort McMurray to replace an injured Thema Williams as the representative from Trinidad and Tobago at an Olympic qualifying event in Rio de Janeiro in April. Dick, a Paul Kane alumna, qualified for the 2016 Summer Games. She will be the first gymnast to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the Olympics.
As she was unable to compete in the trials, Gymnastics Canada invited Dick to compete as a guest gymnast at the Canadian championships. She will only compete on one day of the event.
Dick’s general warm-up will begin at 5 p.m. leading up to the 7 p.m. start of competition on June 1.
Dick will be competing with Team Canada hopefuls. The Canadian Gymnastics Championships is the first qualifier to determine the Canadian gymnastics team that will go to the Olympics in Rio this summer.
Games Legacy grants
Council signed off on a total of $6,750 in Games Legacy Award Program grants on Tuesday.
All grant recipients are required to use the funds they are awarded towards their specified events.
One St. Albert athlete was granted $750 to go towards the U18 Canada Rugby Team Tour to England.
Two ice skaters were given $750 each for attending the Skate Canada National Championships.
Three members of the Edmonton Black Gold Rush Ringette team applied for the grant and were given $500 each for the National Ringette Championships.
Four members of the St. Albert U19AA Ringette team applied and received $375 each to go towards the U19AA Canadian Ringette Championships.
Six members of the Belle Canto Women’s Ensemble who will be attending the International Eisteddfod were also granted $250 each.
The total funds allotted for the 2016 Games Legacy Awards Program grants are $34,400. The remaining $27,650 will be disbursed in the fall intake.
