BALANCING ACT – Hailey Veitch of the St. Albert Skating Centre works on spiral requirements for her program during Wednesday’s training session at Servus Credit Union Place. Veitch recently placed ninth in pre-juvenile women U13 at the Alberta/NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships in Calgary and last weekend was first in the senior bronze A women’s freeskate at the Northwest Region Open and Alberta Winter Games Run-Offs in Whitecourt. The St. Albert figure skating club was represented by a large contingent of performers at both events.

The St. Albert Skating Centre was represented by 26 skaters in 39 events at the Northwest Region Open and Alberta Winter Games (Zone 5 to 8) Run-Offs last weekend in Whitecourt.

The monitoring competition is a lead-up to the StarSkate finals (provincial championships) Feb. 26 to 28 in Leduc.

Results for the SSAC skaters, in alphabetical order, are as follows.

Mackenzie Alexander: third, pre-novice women’s freeskate.

Teana Aubin: seventh, senior bronze A women’s freeskate.

Grace Bekolay: first, Star 4 B.

Kiera Berardacco: second, Star 4 B.

Kailey Ewanchuk: first, Star 5 B U13.

Kiera Fischer: first, silver interpretive A.

Kara Fizzard: first, junior silver women’s freeskate; first, silver interpretive B.

Kyla Garritano: bronze, Star 3 A.

Felica Holterman: silver, Star 2 B.

Emily Jeske: second, senior bronze B women’s freeskate.

Madison Kowaluk: second, senior bronze C women’s freeskate.

Mataya Kowaluk: sixth, senior bronze A women’s freeskate.

Olivia Latridis: second, Star 5 O13; seventh, bronze interpretive B.

Jocelyn Lazowski: third, senior silver women’s freeskate.

Emma MacDonald: third, Star 5 A U13.

Julianna Marrelli: silver, Star 2 F.

Megan Newnham: first, gold women’s freeskate; first, gold interpretive B.

Addison Pehl: third, senior bronze A women’s freeskate.

Makayla Polanski: first, pre-novice women’s freeskate; first, gold interpretive A; second, gold creative skills.

Erinn Simm: second, silver interpretive A.

Grace Smyth: second, Star 5 A U13.

Lauren Smyth: silver, Star 2 A.

Alandra Sorrell: silver, Star 3 F.

Juliette Thievin: first, Star 4 A.

In the team events, two SSAC teams tied for first in senior bronze, followed by silver in Star 3 and second in Star 5 B.

The Alberta Winter Games Run-offs included first-place results for Lexi Douzeich in Star 5 O13 and Erika MacDonald in Star 5 O13 and Jenna Adams placed second in Star 5 U13.

Leading up to the StarSkate finals are two monitoring competitions: Grande Prairie at the end of January and Wainwright in early February. SSAC will send another large delegation to both events in preparation for the StarSkate and adult championships in Leduc.

Last month 10 SSAC skaters competed in the Alberta/NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships in Calgary and the results, in alphabetical order, are as follows.

Kiera Fischer: ninth, juvenile women U14.

Mataya Kowaluk: 16th, pre-juvenile women U11.

Kenyon Monahan: third, pre-juvenile men U14

Addison Pehl: 19th, pre-juvenile women U11.

Brian Popa: fourth, pre-juvenile men U14

Adele Rominan: fourth, juvenile women U14

Erinn Simm: 16th, juvenile women U14.

Elizabeth Taylor: 11th, senior women.

Hayley Vietch: ninth, pre-juvenile women U13.

Teyha Wiltzen: 13th, pre-juvenile women U11.

The fourth-place finishers at the 2015 Canadian Seniors (50-plus) Curling Championships are back on the ice for another run at nationals.

The St. Albert Curling Club foursome of skip Glen Hansen, third Doug McLennan, second George Parsons and lead Don Bartlett slide into the city zones after winning the 34th annual Cliff Fender Senior Bonspiel last weekend at the Thistle Curling Club. The defending Alberta senior champions defeated Gary Greening in the final.

Zones start Friday at the Thistle and six berths are up for grabs at northerns, Jan. 28 to 31 at the Ottewell Curling Club

Provincials are Feb. 17 to 21 at Coaldale and nationals are March 28 to April 2 in Digby, N.S.

McLennan and Parsons are shooting for their third trip to nationals as the Alberta champions in four years. They were bronze medallists with skip Wade White and second Dan Holowaychuk at the 2013 nationals in Summerside, P.E.I. They finished 9-3 overall, the same record compiled by the Hansen rink at the 2015 nationals at the Thistle.

This year at zones Holowaychuk is the second for White’s rink and Don McKenzie of St. Albert is the second for Greening.

McKenzie and Holowaychuk are on the St. Albert Curling Club’s wall of fame in the Friendly Giant Lounge.

A.J. Armstrong of St. Albert will tee it up at the fifth annual Patriot All-American Golf Invitational, Dec. 27 to 31 in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The St. Albert Catholic High School graduate, freshman on the Washington State University golf team is among 84 nationally-recognized elite college PING All-American golfers competing at the 54-hole stroke play tournament on the Wigwam Golf Club. The field is highlighted by more than 45 golfers from division one schools and several are ranked in the top 100.

The tournament honours fallen soldiers from the communities the golfers hail from or where they attend school.

Armstrong, 18, will be playing in honour of Army Sergeant 1st Class Steven M. Langmack of Seattle, who died on May 31, 2005 of injuries sustained from enemy small-arms fire in Quaim, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Armstrong was among six males, including St. Albert High graduate Tyler Saunders of the Texas State University Bobcats, on the 2015 Golf Canada U22 development squad. He was the 2014 St. Francis Xavier Golf Academy male golfer of the year and 2013 McLellan Ross Sun junior golf champion. The former volleyball middle for the St. Albert Skyhawks has also competed at the Canadian junior boys and Canadian men’s amateur championships and a variety of provincial events.
