A trio of St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres were selected in the Western Hockey League bantam draft Thursday.

Brady Nicholas, a centre, was picked in the fifth round (91st overall) by the Saskatoon Blades, netminder Evan Fradette also went in the fifth round (97th overall) to the Portland Winterhawks and defenceman Justin MacDonald was taken in the 11th round (241st overall) by the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Nicholas, the Sabres’ captain, scored 14 goals and was second on the team in points with 43 in 30 games.

Fradette, the recipient of the north division’s outstanding netminder award in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League, posted a 12-2-4 record, ranked fifth in goals-against average at 1.81 GAA, posted five shutouts and .925 save percentage.

MacDonald tied for the team lead in points for defencemen with 18 in 31 games.

They were among seven Sabres on the Northwest team at the 30th annual Alberta Cup for second-year bantam players last week in Canmore.

The junior A St. Albert Miners make their season debut this weekend in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

The Miners host the Saskatchewan SWAT tonight at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

This is the first year for the Saskatoon-based SWAT in junior A lacrosse.

Last year the Miners finished third out of four teams at 7-11.

The St. Albert Crude have home floor advantage this weekend in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

The junior B Tier I team plays the Rockyview Silvertips (0-2) of Airdrie tonight at 9 p.m. and the Saskatchewan SWAT at 4 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.

The Crude are 0-2 to start the season after losses of 14-6 to the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels (2-0) in St. Albert and 12-9 on the road against the Red Deer Rampage (2-0) last weekend.

Alicia Easthope and James Robillard of the Sandpiper Golf & Country Club carded low scores at last weekend’s Nike Junior Golf Series event at the Henderson Lake Golf Club in Lethbridge.

Easthope finished second in the U19 female division with a two-day score of 164 (plus 20) with identical rounds of 82.

Sharmaine Rapisura placed first at 162 (plus 18) with scores of 79 and 83.

Robillard tied for third in the U19 male division at 153 (plus 13) with rounds of 75 and 78.

Alexander Smith of Calgary was the top golfer at 138 (minus two) with scores of 69 both days.

It was the first Alberta tournament of the season on the Canadian Junior Golf Association circuit.

The newest St. Albert Impact men’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association is on display Tuesday at Riel Park.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. against the Comets in the Virk table, one of eight Tier 4 divisions in the EDSA.

Both teams won their season openers: 4-1 Impact against ES Sporting and 2-0 Comets over the Pumas Old Boys.

The Impact scorers were Abdirahman Ismael, Scott Robson, Mario Ruicea and Jacob Toop.
