Beth Crothers, a U16 callup for the St. Albert Impact division 1B women, scored the winning goal in Sunday’s season opener in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

The Impact led 1-0 at halftime.

The next match is May 8 against ASC Inter at 6 p.m. at the ESA Complex.

The Impact finished fourth last year, with eight wins, three ties and five losses and a goals for/against of plus five.

Fourth place was the order of finish for the Bellerose Bulldogs and St. Albert Skyhawks in their divisional finals in metro Edmonton badminton last week.

Bellerose qualified in division two and the Skyhawks competed in division three after winning their respective quarter-finals.

Bellerose was the top division two pool C team at 7-1 (28 GW/12 GL) and the Skyhawks placed third in division three at 13-3 (55 GW/25 GL) for playoff berths.

Both teams lost their semifinals and bronze-medal matches with identical 3-2 scores.

Bellerose played the McNally Tigers, first in pool B 8-2 (29 GW/21 GL), and Lillian Osborne Legends, first in pool A at 10-0 (46 GW/4 GL), at Lillian Osborne High School.

The Skyhawks had matches against the O’Leary Spartans, second at 14-2 (55 GW/25 GL), and Oscar Romero Ravens, fourth at 10-6 (47 GW/33 GL), at Fort Saskatchewan Senior High School.

The Bellerose lineup against McNally consisted of Ivanna Gartner (female singles) Ethan Pichlick (male singles), Vikki Warner and Jade Bencharski (female doubles), Jaedon Carroll and Chris Curr (male doubles) and Nick Sorensen and Katie Atkins (mixed doubles).

Bellerose won female singles and female doubles against McNally, who lost 5-0 in the gold/silver match against the defending champion W.P. Wagner Warriors, first in pool D at 10-0 (43 GW/7 GL).

The Bellerose players against the Legends in the bronze match were Gartner (female singles), Sigi Peshke (male singles), Warner and Bencharski (female doubles), Carroll and Sorensen (male doubles) and Pichlick and Stephanie Tan (mixed doubles).

Bellerose prevailed in mixed and female doubles.

The Skyhawks were represented by Emily Willette (female singles), John Martins (male singles), Rachel Cruse and Savannah Love (female doubles), Chris Hajek and Brendan Gervais (male doubles) and Feng Xu and Zenn Velardo (mixed doubles).

Male singles and the male doubles team won matches against O’Leary and the Ravens and in mixed doubles the Skyhawks lost both in the third match by two points each.

The Fort Saskatchewan Sting, first at 15-1 (71 GW/9 GL), repeated by defeating O’Leary 3-2 in the gold/silver match.

The last St. Albert high school team to win metro Edmonton badminton honours was the Paul Kane Blues in 2009 in the city conference.

Three players from the Paul Kane Blues are among the 108 Team Alberta U18 candidates for the 2016 Football Canada Cup.

The final camp invitees include quarterback Connor Guy, running back Keaton Zaychkowsky and offensive lineman Anthony Swecera of the 2015 metro Edmonton division one Carr finalists.

Talent identification camps were held this month in Raymond, Calgary, Edmonton and Lacombe as the Team Alberta coaching staff evaluated more than 400 players.

The final selection camp is May 13 to 15 in Edmonton.

The Football Canada Cup is July 9 to 15 in Winnipeg.

Last year’s Team Alberta roster featured receiver Tanner Buchannan and long snapper Zach Dreger of the Blues. An ankle injury prevented Dreger from playing at the U18 national tournament.

Registrations are being accepted for the seventh annual Hawks Combo Camp.

The volleyball and basketball sessions run Aug. 23 to 25 at the SkyDome.

The camp is for males and females 12 to 15 years old to prepare for school volleyball and basketball club team tryouts.

Volleyball runs from 9 a.m. to noon and basketball goes from 12:45 to 3:45 p.m.

Players can register for one sport individually or attend the entire day and compete in both sports.

Krista Zubick, a multi-sport St. Albert Catholic High School alumna and former Alberta Pandas’ volleyball standout who made Canada’s B team in 2010 and 2011 and the A team in 2013 and later played pro with Laon Volley Club in France, is returning as the volleyball instructor.

John Dedrick, head coach of the Skyhawks women’s basketball team and co-founder of PANTHAWK Basketball Academy for females 13 to 18 years old, is the hoops instructor.

The registration fee is $100 for one session (nine hours of instruction) or $185 for both (18 hours of instruction).

Email Dedrick at [email protected] to register.
