Eight local hockey players were selected to the Team Northwest roster for the 30th annual Alberta Cup for second-year bantam players.

Representing the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres are Evan Fradette and Ryley Osland in net, defencemen Kyle Fulton and Justin MacDonald and forwards’ Stuart Dovey, Brady Nicholas and Blake Sydlowski.

Cameron Aucoin of Sturgeon County, who played for the PAC Saints of Spruce Grove, was also named to the team.

Rosters for the eight Alberta Cup teams were finalized at zone camps held last weekend for players born in 2001.

The Alberta Cup is April 28 to May 1 in Canmore and is the last major competition for Western Hockey League scouts to attend before the May 5 bantam draft.

Eighty players from the four-day tournament will be invited to the U16 provincial camp in July for spots on Team Alberta at the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup in October at Calgary.

Meanwhile, Fradette was voted the most outstanding goalie in the north division of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Fradette (12-2-4), ranked third in shutouts with five, fourth in save percentage at .925 and sixth in goals-against average at 1.81 in the AMBHL.

The St. Albert Charge U19A belles finished fourth at the Western Canadian Ringette Championships after beating the host team 5-3 last weekend in Richmond, B.C.

Amelie Gautier potted the first two goals of the game and Taylor Dagenais, Caitlin Palfy and Abbey Schuttler also scored in the penalty-filled affair.

Tianna Miller was between the pipes in the team’s first win at the five-team tournament.

The Ringette Alberta champions lost 6-3 to Saskatchewan, 2-1 to Richmond, 7-0 to British Columbia and 5-3 to Manitoba.

The Charge finished 15-20-3 overall, including a 14-6-2 stretch since December.

The St. Albert Heavenly Rollers are recruiting junior girls between the ages of 13 to 18 to join their roller derby league.

An open house is scheduled April 21, from 8 to 9 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place, for girls and their parents to learn more about roller derby. League members will be available to answer questions and to demonstrate the sport. No prior skating skills are required.
