With all the news of what the Edmonton Oilers have gained, many may have missed what is being lost – a local player is leaving the province.

St. Albert Minor Hockey Association product Travis Ewanyk, who was drafted to the Oilers after a stint with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League, has been traded.

As part of the draft-day brokering to increase the Oilers’ blue-line talent Ewanyk, who has been playing for the Edmonton’s farm team the Oklahoma City Barons, was traded to the Ottawa Senators along with a draft pick.

In return, the Oilers picked up defenceman Eric Gryba.

The St. Albert Senior B Miners picked up a win against the Calgary Mountaineers at Go Auto Arena last Saturday evening.

The second-place Miners posted an 11-6 victory over their southern opponents in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League’s Senior B division.

With the score tied 3-3 after the first period, the Miners had their work cut out for them but pulled ahead 8-4 after the second and kept up the pace in the third.

The Miners’ scoring was spread throughout the team, with only Pearce Just and Spencer Lee scoring multiple goals with two each. Team captain Jordan Cornfield, while he didn’t manage to score himself, came up with an impressive six assists.

The St. Albert Crude, meanwhile, struggled in a Sunday-afternoon match against the Calgary Shamrock.

The Crude have struggled to hit the 0.500 mark in the northern division of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League’s Junior B Tier 1 group, as have the Shamrocks in the southern division.

The June 28 match saw the Shamrocks take an early lead with a goal two minutes in, and the Crude couldn’t make up the deficit, eventually dropping the tilt 4-10.

Putting points on the board for the home team were Cam Ellingson, Simon Hansen, Owen Feist and Justin Murray.

The end of the Edmonton Youth Softball Association season saw St. Albert teams come up with some rousing success.

From among the 13 divisions reported after the championship matches last weekend, St. Albert teams won gold or silver in five of them.

The St. Albert Falcons won a gold medal in the U12 Squirts boys division, beating out the High Park Hooligans by a comfortable 11-7 margin.

The St. Albert Angels A won in the mixed U10 Mites A division after squeaking out a 14-13 win over Sherwood Park, while the Angels also won in the mixed U10 Mites C division with a tight 15-14 win over the Edmonton Warriors.

Silver medals went to the girls Angels in both the U14 PeeWee C division and the U16 Bantam B division as well. The PeeWee girls fell 9-8 to South Edmonton, while the Bantam girls dropped their final match 13-11 to Sherwood Park.
