The season starts this weekend for the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Raiders play the Southside Athletic Club today at 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena and the puck drop for Sunday’s home opener is 1:15 p.m. against the Canadian Athletic Club at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders have a handful of players back from last season’s 18-9-7 showing in the north division and opening playoff round loss.
The St. Albert Heavenly Rollers’ mixed team (Beelzebubs and Arch Angels) has a bout on tap tonight against the Hwy. 14 Roller Derby visitors at Servus Credit Union Place.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first jam whistle is 7 p.m.

The Heavenly Rollers are a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the governing body for women’s flat-track roller derby.
Monday the St. Albert Sabres host the KC Squires in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Faceoff is 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres are 2-0-1 and KC is 1-0 to start the season.
Blake Sydlowski leads the Sabres in scoring with three goals and six points.
This weekend marks the season debut for the bantam AAA female St. Albert Raiders in league play.
Today’s faceoff is 5:45 p.m. against the defending champion Edmonton Lightning at the Meadows Community Recreation Centre and Sunday’s home game against the Spruce Grove PAC Saints starts at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

Meanwhile, the St. Albert club now boosts of the largest junior curling program in the Edmonton area with 102 youths between the ages of seven and 17.
The first session for the Little Rockers is Sunday from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
The Sir George Simpson Voyageurs edged out the Lorne Akins Gators in the race to the finish line at the annual St. Albert Physical Education Council district junior high cross-country championships last week on the Riverlot 56 trails.
The overall results in the junior, intermediate and senior divisions listed Simpson with 1,136 points, seven more than Lorne Akins at 1,129.
The Richard S. Fowler Falcons placed third at 1,028, followed by the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders at 991 and the ESSMY Leopards at 751 to round out the top five.
The top three junior, intermediate and senior finishers are as follows:
Junior: Lorne Akins (386), Simpson (373) and Fowler (349).
Intermediate: Fowler (408), Simpson (355) and Lorne Akins (343).
Senior: Simpson (408), Lorne Akins (400) and VJM (360).
The top male and female runners in each division qualified for zones at Goldbar Park but Wednesday’s results were unavailable at press time.
