Three St. Albert gymnasts are going to the 2012 Alberta Winter Games after scoring high marks at the qualification meet last weekend in Red Deer.

Amelie Gautier and Aly Findling of the St. Albert Gymnastics Club and Monique Wright of the Dynamyx Gymnastics Club will compete for Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead at the Feb. 9-12 games at Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County.

Gautier and Findling qualified as level 4 team members for Zone 5 and Wright is on the level 2 team.

They are among 64 gymnasts from eight zones who will compete at the games. Each zone sends a team of eight gymnasts: four in the level 2 category and generally two level 3 and two level 4 performers.

In level 4, Gautier finished seventh all-around, and first in Zone 5, with a final score of 45.400. She was the bronze medallist in vault with 12.800 points. Findling placed eighth all-around as the runner-up in Zone 5 with 45.366 points. In vault she won silver with 12.900 points.

Wright finished third all-around, and second in Zone 5, in level 2 with 49.500 points. She also took home silver in vault with 12.800 points.

Dynamyx gymnast Danielle Fenton was also named the alternate for the level 3 and 4 team. Fenton placed seventh all-around, and third in Zone 5, with 48.166 points. She also captured bronze in vault with 12.850 points.

Paul Kane High School teacher Jeff Paulus has signed on as an assistant coach with FC Edmonton in the North American Soccer League.

Paulus will also continue his head coaching duties with the NAIT Ooks. Under his direction the Ooks men’s soccer team won gold last month at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association championship in Quebec City. He was named the 2011 coach of the year by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

Paulus is a staff coach with the National Training Center and co-coach for Edmonton Scottish in the Alberta Major Soccer League. He is also the head coach and director of the Paul Kane Soccer Academy.

The deadline to submit applications for the fourth annual John Reid Memorial Scholarship is Jan. 9.

Players born between 1990 and 1993 who played bantam AAA in St. Albert are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship.

The successful applicant will be announced Jan. 19 during the opening ceremonies of the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Servus Credit Union Place. Past winners were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda and Steven Woolger.

The 34th annual invitational tournament is hosted by the St. Albert Sabres and the St. Albert Raiders.

The 16-team tournament line-up includes the Sabres, Burnaby Winter Club Bruins, Calgary Bisons, Calgary Royals, Canadian Athletic Club, Cloverdale Colts, Lloydminster Heat, Los Angeles Selects, North Shore Winter Club Hawks of Vancouver, Notre Dame Hounds, Prairie Storm of Balgonie, Sask., Pursuit of Excellence Academy of Kelowna, Semiahmoo Ravens, Sherwood Park Flyers, SSAC Southgate Lions and the Wenatchee Jr. Wild of Washington State.

The Sabres are in the same pool as Notre Dame, Los Angeles and Cloverdale. Los Angeles will make its second tournament appearance in three years after becoming the first United States team to win the championship in 2010.
