Eight goals in Saturday’s first period sealed the deal for the senior B St. Albert Miners against the South Edmonton Warriors in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Brett Rayner potted two of his three goals in the opening 20 minutes as the Miners led by six, en route to the 12-4 win at Go Auto Arena.
Tyler Douglas, Derek Draper and captain Jordan Cornfield tallied twice, Ryan Davis scored once and added three assists and Pearce Just and John Lintz notched singles against the last-place Warriors (1-9).
The Miners trail the first-place Rockyview Knights (10-1) of Airdrie after their third win in a row and ninth in 11 games. Both losses were against the Knights.
The next game for the 2014 Presidents’ Cup national bronze medallists and provincial champions is Saturday against the visiting Calgary Mountaineers (6-6) at 5:30 p.m.
The first victory for the St. Albert Impact premier women since their April 26 season opener in the Edmonton District Soccer Association was Sunday’s 1-0 decision against Angels Scottish SC at Riel Park.
Kirsten Marshall’s goal early in the first half and Charlotte Lendzion’s shutout goalkeeping against the Angels (3-2-2) stopped a six-game winless skid for the Impact (2-4-2).
The Impact played second-place Victoria (6-0-2) Tuesday but the score was unavailable at press time.
The next match is June 30 versus the last-place Ital/Inter/Wolves (0-7-1) at 7 p.m. at Riel Park. It’s the same team the Impact beat 4-3 to kick off the EDSA fixtures.
The St. Albert Crude start a four-game homestand in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League, when the junior B Tier 1 team hosts the Calgary Shamrocks at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
Both teams are ranked fourth in their respective divisions. The Crude (6-9 in the north) had their three-game winning streak snapped in Saskatoon last weekend and the Shamrocks (6-6-2 in the south) are 2-2-1 in their last five games.
The Crude are coming off losses of 21-6 and 10-7 to the Saskatchewan SWAT (10-3-1), the top team in the south.
