The Sir George Simpson Voyageurs will defend their SAPEC Tier 1 junior high volleyball championships Tuesday at Bellerose Composite High School.
Simpson plays the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders in the girls’ final at 6 p.m. and the Lorne Akins Gators in the boys’ final at 7:30 p.m.
In league play the Simpson girls swept VJM 25-18, 25-18, 26-24 and the Simpson boys lost 25-20, 14-25, 13-25, 16-25 to Lorne Akins.
In the girls’ semifinals Thursday, Simpson (8-1) swept the Richard S. Fowler Falcons (6-3), the only team to beat the Voyageurs this year, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22 and VJM (8-1) defeated Lorne Akins (6-3) 25-13, 25-27, 25-10, 25-14.
In the boys’ semifinals Wednesday, Simpson (8-1) rallied to knock off the William D. Cuts Crusaders (6-3) 23-25, 19-25, 25-8, 25-20, 17-15 and Lorne Akins (9-0) downed the Elmer S. Gish Warriors (5-4) 25-12, 25-13, 25-22.
Last year Simpson swept its best-of-five finals against Cuts by the girls and VJM by the boys to finish undefeated in their respective divisions.
The Bellerose Bulldogs were chasing their first metro Edmonton men’s volleyball championship since the team’s 2002 city conference triumph in Friday’s division two final against the Leduc Tigers.

Both teams finished first in their respective pools in league play.
The Bulldogs (10-1, 32 GW/10 GL) advanced to the final in Thursday’s 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-13 semifinal win against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (9-2, 28 GW/9 GL) at Bellerose.
The Bulldogs’ only loss in pool B was the 25-20, 23-25, 26-24, 19-25, 12-15 against the St. Albert Skyhawks (5-5, 23 GW/17 GL) on Oct. 29 at Bellerose.
Leduc (11-0, 33 GW/5 GL) swept the Paul Kane Blues (9-2, 28 GW/12 GL) in three sets in Thursday’s semifinal.
Leduc dropped more sets in three playoff matches (three) than in eight pool A matches (two).
