The St. Albert Miners duplicated last year’s result at the Presidents’ Cup senior B national championship with two wins and four losses.

The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League champions finished fifth overall at the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne after placing sixth last year in Burnaby, B.C.

Netminder Alex Coutts, a pickup from the Calgary Knights, was named to the second all-star team. His goals-against average was 9.63.

Brad Scott led the Miners in points with 22 and Kyle Schram was the top goal scorer with 10.

The pennant winners in the St. Albert men’s and women’s soccer leagues finished out of the medal round at the tier IV provincials last weekend in Calgary.

Chester City was outscored 15-2 in three losses in the men’s draw. Injuries and a lack of players played a role in the team’s winless record.

Vinny Segreto and Conrad Haswell scored in the 6-2 loss to Blizzard Phoenix, the tournament’s gold-medal winners. Chester kicked off the match with 13 players but lost Haswell and captain Mike Fulton to injuries.

Chester was also shut out 6-0 by the Punjab Warriors and 3-0 by the Lakeland reps. Chester had 14 players available against the Warriors until Jason Steele suffered an injury. Chester ended the tournament with only 12 players against Lakeland.

GSE, the second-place team in the men’s league, had qualified for provincials but dropped out because of a shortage of players.

Because of their top-two finish in the standings, Chester (10-2-2) and GSE (10-3-1) both qualified for the league’s Sept. 13 semifinals. Game times are 6:30 p.m. at Eldorado field.

The final is Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Riel Park turf field.

In the women’s provincial bracket, the Morinville Ladies placed fifth overall after tying the St. Albert Impact 2 team 3-3 and losing 5-2 to Calgary’s Eastside Athletics.

Morinville (17-0-1) and Impact 2 (11-2-1), the first-place division 3A team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association, traded goals throughout end-to-end action. Short benches also had an effect on the outcome. Missy Atkinson, Rebecca Redding and Jennie Miniaci scored for Morinville.

Steph Gray and Suzanne Gaetz netted goals in the loss to Eastside. The eventual gold medallists had a numbers advantage against a Morinville side labouring with tired legs.

Morinville and Impact 2 tied for second in group two but the St. Albert club moved on to the bronze-medal game with a better plus-minus on goal difference. In the playoff match, Impact 2 dropped a 3-0 decision to Rionero FC.
