Fresh from her championship belt triumph at the Ringside World Championships, St. Albert boxer Susan Haas will head to the Ukraine this weekend to compete for Canada at the Nikolev City Cup.

At the recent Kansas City tournament, Haas won two tough battles against Angel Anderson of Edmonton and Myriam Da Silva Rondeu of Quebec for the Ringside championship in the 152-pound women’s open category.

The Cougar Boxing Club member is 43-9 going into the European Boxing Confederation event in the southern Ukraine shipbuilding city. The Paul Kane High School alumna is the only Western Canadian fighter making the trip. The rest of Team Canada is comprised of women from Quebec and Ontario.

The Hawks Basketball Academy (HBA) invites girls who are passionate about improving their fundamental basketball skills to register and attend the athlete selection camps on Sept. 8 and 11 at the SkyDome.

The cost is $10. HBA coaches will run on-court sessions, followed by question-and-answer periods for parents and players.

HBA is limited to 24 girls. Selected athletes will be informed by the coaches within days of the conclusion of the selection camps.

HBA was formed last year in St. Albert to provide U13 females with training opportunities that are aligned with the Canada Basketball approach to developing young basketball players. The program is also based on the Train to Train stage, as recommended by the Canadian Sport for Life Movement. The basic premise is to focus on player development by spending most of the time on individual skill training and physical development rather than on team development. HBA complements rather than replaces the school and/or community team.

This year, the program has expanded to include U15 females as well.

The coaching staff features John Dedrick, head coach of the two-time defending 3A provincial female gold-medal winning St. Albert Skyhawks and athletic director at St. Albert Catholic High School; Andre Lussier of Sherwood Park, NCCP master course conductor and coaching advisory board member with Canada Basketball; and Dave Pusch of St. Albert, co-founder of Hardcorps Fitness.

For more information, contact Dedrick at 780-717-6462 or [email protected], or Lussier at [email protected].
