Andy Tiedemann of St. Albert was named captain of Team Canada for the Americas Rugby Championship in Langford, B.C.

The 25-year-old prop from the St. Albert Rugby Football Club has 21 caps for Canada since 2009. He represented Canada at the 2008 Junior World Championship and 2011 World Cup of Rugby. The high school rugby product of the Paul Kane Blues is the second player in SARFC history to play for the senior national team and the first to scrum down at the World Cup.

Canada’s first game at the Americas was Friday against Uruguay, but the score was unavailable at press time.

Tiedemann and Duncan Maguire, an outside centre with the 2013 Labatt’s Cup provincial finalists from SARFC, were selected to the starting 15 for the Uruguay match. Both were members of the Calgary-based Prairie Wolfpack in the Canadian Rugby Championship league.

Kyle Baillie, a SARFC forward who saw action for The Rock in the CRC, was a reserve against Uruguay.

Kyle Gilmour, a forward with SARFC’s first 15 and the Wolfpack, is also on Canada’s roster.

The Canadian squad was selected after the completion of the 2013 CRC season.

Canada also plays the USA Eagles on Tuesday and Argentina next Saturday.

Last year Argentina beat Canada in the final at Langford.
