The midget AAA St. Albert Cardinals haven’t gotten off to a winning start as they head down the Norwest League homestretch.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals were in Okotoks to take on Foothills Black and came out on the wrong end of a 18-7 final score. Nate Coffin hit a two-run home run in a six-run fifth inning in the losing effort, while Riley Moskaluk pitched all five innings and took the loss, with 15 of the 18 runs earned.
On Thursday, the team was back home at Legion Memorial Park to take on the Edmonton Cardinals 2. St. Albert trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and managed to close the gap to one thanks to an RBI from shortstop Ryan Anderson, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
St. Albert also hit the road to play Spruce Grove on Wednesday night, but the score was not available on the Norwest League website as of press time.
The Cardinals are in the middle of a very busy stretch as they near the end of the Norwest League season, including a string of four straight road games, which starts on Monday at John Fry Park as they go up against the Edmonton Cardinals 1. On Wednesday, they hit the road to take on Sherwood Park Green and then they play a doubleheader in Okotoks on Saturday, July 23, against Foothills Black.
The Cardinals return to St. Albert to wrap up the season against Foothills Red on Sunday, July 24 at 3 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

Nathan Mitchell and Brandon Jennings are both defensive backs on Team Alberta at the 2011 Football Canada Cup being held in Lethbridge. The tournament is a showcase for the best U18 football players in the country
In their first game on Saturday, July 9, Alberta took on the defending champions from Saskatchewan, making quick work of their prairie neighbours with a 52-19 win. Alberta scored on their first two possessions to take a quick 10-0 lead as they cruised to victory. Mitchell had an interception in the second half that led to a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Matt Bonaca from Salisbury Composite High School in Sherwood Park.
Alberta’s second game was a semifinal matchup on Tuesday against Ontario East. Alberta trailed 8-4 at the half, but stormed back in the second half to win 25-8. Bonaca fired three touchdown passes in the second half to complete the Alberta comeback.
That win gave Alberta the opportunity to square off against Quebec on Friday night in the championship final at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium. Quebec defeated British Columbia 31-15 in the other semifinal.

The senior B St. Albert Miners are heading into the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) playoffs on the right note after an offensive outburst against the Spruce Grove Slash Wednesday night.
The Miners exploded for 19 goals in their final regular season game at the Grant Fuhr Arena in Spruce Grove, beating the Slash 19-4.
Sean Reid led the way for the Miners with three goals and seven assists on the evening. Jordan Cornfield had three goals and five assists, while Kyle Schram also chipped in with a hat trick of his own.
The win secures second place in the RMLL senior B division for the Miners and home floor advantage for their first-round playoff series against the Edmonton Outlaws. Game one is Sunday at 6 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place.
The Miners went 2-2 against the Outlaws on the season, and outscored them 37-30.
