The St. Albert Tigers Black didn’t have much of a roar over the weekend, winning only one of four games in Sunburst Baseball League action.
Playing in Fort Saskatchewan, the senior squad dropped both ends of their doubleheader Saturday to the Red Deer Stags by scores of 9-3 (11 innings) and 8-3. On Sunday, they dropped their opening game to the Red Deer Riggers 13-5 before bouncing back to win the second game 11-3.
The Tigers Black play their next game on Tuesday, July 12, when they take on their junior counterparts, the St. Albert Tigers Orange, at 8 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park. In the meantime, the Tigers Orange travel to Fort Saskatchewan to play the Athletics tonight at 7 p.m.
The junior A St. Albert Miners didn’t get the fireworks they were looking over the Canada Day long weekend, earning only one point out of a possible four in Calgary.
On Saturday, the Miners earned a 5-5 tie with the Calgary Jr. Mountaineers at South Fish Creek Arena. The St. Albert squad wasn’t able to capitalize on its power play chances during the game, going 1-for-10.
Eric Turner, Josh Sullivan, Nick Amendt, Matt McKenzie and Spencer Gelinas each had goals for the Miners.
Back at South Fish Creek on Sunday, a lacklustre second period did the Miners in as they gave up seven goals in the frame en route to an 11-4 loss to the Okotoks Jr. Raiders.
Gelinas had a pair of goals in the losing effort, while Turner and Richard Thompson each had one.
James Delaney had a hat trick for Okotoks, while Chad Mitchell and Tanner Newitt each had a pair of goals.
Meanwhile, the senior B St. Albert Miners appear to be headed in the opposite direction, as they won both their games in Calgary over the weekend.
The Miners first dispatched the Calgary Knights by a score of 10-7 on Saturday evening at South Fish Creek Arena, then returned on Sunday afternoon and walloped the Calgary Sr. Mountaineers by a score of 15-5.
With just two games left on their schedule, the Miners have the first-place Okotoks Sr. Raiders clearly in their sights. If St. Albert can win its last two games of the regular season, they will finish in top spot.
Those remaining games are against the junior A St. Albert Miners on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place and against the last-place Spruce Grove Slash at Grant Fuhr Arena on Wednesday, July 13 at 8 p.m.
