Home floor advantage favoured the St. Albert Miners in senior B action last weekend in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The defending provincial champions improved to 8-4-1 by defeating the Calgary Knights 9-5 and the Calgary Mounties 11-7 at Performance Arena.
Three unanswered goals in the third period by the Miners broke open Saturday’s close contest against the Knights. Sean Reid and captain Nate Schmidt tallied twice for the winners. Chris Schmidt, Chris Buckley, Steve Tessarolo, Lucas Huyser-Wierenga and Graedon Cornfield added singles. Period scores were 3-3 after the first and 6-5 Miners after the second.
The fight card included three scraps. Owen Chatwin of the Miners also received a match penalty for abuse of an official with 26 seconds left in the middle period in the aftermath of a fight.
On Sunday the Miners rebounded from a 3-1 deficit in the first period by outscoring the Mounties 6-2. Nate Schmidt scored the team’s first four goals. He also picked up two assists. Shane Lopatynski potted a pair and Steven Zwack, Chris Schmidt, Kyle Schram, Reid and Cornfield also connected.
Other than one fight, the match was a tame affair.
The win was the third in a row and the fifth in the last six games for the second-place Miners.
After tonight’s clash with the last-place Spruce Grove Slash, the Miners have four games remaining until the playoffs. Ball-drop is 8 p.m. at Performance.
