The St. Albert Cardinals will spread their wings at the Western Canadian Peewee AAA Baseball Championship this week at Henry Singer Ball Park in Spruce Grove.

In pool play the Cardinals are on the diamond Thursday against South Central of Manitoba at 6:30 p.m., Friday against Saskatoon at 11:30 a.m. and the host Spruce Grove White Sox at 5:30 p.m.

The top two teams in both pools advance to Saturday’s semifinals at 1 p.m.

Sunday the bronze final is 10 a.m.; the gold-medal game is 1 p.m.

The Sherwood Park A’s, North Winnipeg, Regina and a team from British Colombia are grouped together in pool play.

The Cardinals are seeded as Alberta No. 2 and the A’s are Alberta No. 1.

At the Tier I provincials during the August long weekend the Cardinals fell 9-6 to the A’s in the final after rattling off four wins.

In league play the A’s (26-4) finished first and the Cardinals (26-7) placed second overall. The Cardinals beat the A’s four times in seven games before the final.

Thirty-two teams hooped it up at the first annual J.R. Patrick Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament last weekend at the Servus Credit Union Place parking lot.

The action included 28 male and four female teams in various age divisions.

The team that travelled from farthest away was the Ballers from Fort McMurray and they finished second in the 10 to 12 division.

The Paul Kane Blues also placed second in the 16 to 17 division.

Zane Warren of the Blues was crowned the three-point shootout champion and teammate Quinn Peterson was the runner-up in the U18 slam dunk contest.

The St. Albert Minor Hockey Association’s inaugural equipment swap Saturday was a winner.

The gently used equipment of any size that was dropped off Friday at the SAMHA office included six hockey bags, 30 shin pads, 35 pairs of gloves, 44 pairs of pants, 25 elbow pads, 16 helmets, eight cages, 31 pairs of skates, 29 shoulder pads and numerous neck guards.

They were available to take home at no charge Saturday, as parents had their children try on the equipment.

At the end of the day, roughly a quarter of the equipment was left over and donated to The Brick Sports Central to be refurbished. The website is www.sportcentral.org.
