The last Churchill Cup for Canada ended in defeat against the England Saxons in the tournament final last Saturday in Worcester, England.

The 37-6 loss saw St. Albert prop Andy Tiedemann sub on towards the end of the match. It was 15-6 at halftime. A lack of finish cost Canada a couple of tries in the first half.

Tiedemann, 22, was a replacement at prop in an uncapped appearance in Canada’s 26-12 win against Italy A. The high school rugby product of the Paul Kane Blues was credited with his 10th cap as a replacement prop in the 34-18 win against Russia.

This was Tiedemann’s third-straight year at the Churchill Cup. In 2010 Canada finished 2-1 with the former University of Victoria Vikes’ player in the starting 15. Canada humbled Uruguay 48-6 and upset France A 33-27 in Colorado. In the final Canada lost 38-18 to the Saxons in New Jersey.

Next year Canada and the United Sates will become integrated into the global rugby calendar with test matches against tier 1 opposition.

The Churchill Cup provided regular test competition for Canada and the United States and opportunities for 11 other nations since 2003 to develop their players in an elite environment. It’s been hosted in 17 venues and included 13 participating nations since 2003.

Meanwhile, Canada’s roster for the 2011 World Cup is expected to be announced shortly and Tiedemann is a sure bet to be named to the national team for the Sept. 9 to Oct. 23 tournament in New Zealand. Canada is grouped in pool A with New Zealand, France, Tonga and Japan.

The St. Albert Cardinals were charged with five errors in Wednesday’s 4-2 loss against Sherwood Park Gold in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League.

It was 2-2 when the Gold (11-4) generated runs in the third and fifth innings. Both teams scored twice in the first inning.

Riley Moskaluk of the Cardinals struck-out six during a five-inning stint. Nathan Coffin registered the only hit of the game for St. Albert to drive in a run. Marcus Blair and Jay Florkevich scored for the home team.

The last win for the Cardinals (3-12) was a 9-2 extra-inning affair against SEEBA 2 (4-7) last week in Edmonton. Starting pitcher Tanner Karpinski struck-out six, walked one while allowing four hits and one earned run over six innings. Ryan Anderson, in his first outing of the season after a lengthy stretch on the disabled list, came in for the seventh but couldn’t get the last two outs. He was replaced by Blair with the bases loaded. Blair gave up a sacrifice fly, which tied it at one run apiece. In the eighth the Cardinals blew it open and sealed it comfortably as Blair picked up the win.

This weekend the Cardinals are competing in the Okotoks tournament with games against the Lethbridge Elks, Trail and Okotoks Black.

The next Norwest game is Tuesday against first-place SEEBA 1 (12-1) at 7 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The St. Albert Cardinals are flying high in the Bantam Performance League with a 10-2 record after beating Sherwood Park Gold 9-5 Wednesday at Legion Memorial Park.

Erik Sabrowski swung a big bat while going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Connor Burns keyed a three-run first inning with a two-run double.

Cam Mazur also chipped in with two hits during a solid stint in centre field.

Aaron Larose threw a complete game for his second win of the season.

This weekend the Cardinals play Sherwood Park Green twice — today at 9 a.m. at Legion park and Sunday at 6 p.m. in Sherwood Park.

On tap next week for the Cardinals is a tournament in Okotoks, starting Thursday against the Moose Jaw Mallards. They will also play Okotoks Black, Regina White Sox and the Okotoks Outlaws.
