The St. Albert Steel recently pulled off a pair of trades involving Calgary products of the Edge School academy.

Derek Bacon, a 19-year-old centre, returns to his hometown in exchange for left-winger John Baird of the Calgary Canucks.

Bacon (27-36-63, 99 PIM in 60 GP) ranked second in Steel scoring in his first season in St. Albert.

The 20-year-old Baird (14-10-24 in 30 GP) is joining his third AJHL team. In 81 career games the Leduc product recorded 35 goals, 30 assists and 20 PIM.

In a deal involving forwards, Tanner Labbe, 19, was sent to the Camrose Kodiaks for Mackenzie Royer, 18. Labbe (6-14-20 in 32 GP) battled through injuries in his Steel debut. He was then flipped by Camrose to the Canucks for forward Kieran O’Niel.

Last season Royer played 10 games with Camrose and split time with the Calgary Hitmen and Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League. The Spruce Grove native broke into the WHL in 2009/09 with the Hitmen.

Tyler Bunz of St. Albert was one of 10 goalies invited to Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence last week in Calgary.

Four of the goalies will advance to Canada’s world junior hockey team’s summer development camp at Rexall Place in early August.

Bunz, 19, was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round (121st overall) in the 2010 NHL entry draft. In his third Western Hockey League season with the Medicine Hat Tigers, the former bantam AAA Sabre and midget AAA Raider posted a 35-13-4-4 record and three shutouts. His save percentage was .919.

The St. Albert Cardinals raised their bantam AAA record to 8-2 after sweeping the Fort McMurray Oil Giants on the road in Saturday’s doubleheader in league play.

In the opening game, Aaron Larose pitched three innings of no-hit ball and Austin Watamaniuk picked up the save by hurling two scoreless innings in the 5-4 victory.

Eric Sabrowski and Sam Forster had two-hit efforts and Mat Brisson knocked in a pair of runs. Mason Libich also turned in a strong performance behind the dish and drove home one run.

In the second game, Larose broke open a tight contest in the fifth inning with a towering three-run homer to lead the Cardinals to a 14-4 romp. Sabrowski worked four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while helping his own cause by going 4-for-5 at the plate. Forster, Watamaniuk and Brisson all had multi-hit games during a 23-hit St. Albert attack.

The Cardinals were in action Tuesday against Sherwood Park Gold, but the score was unavailable at press time.

Next Tuesday they host Sherwood Park Gold at 7 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
