The Sturgeon Spirits are going for gold at the sixth annual Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association rugby championships this weekend in Calgary.

In the eight-team tier I (4A schools) draws the lady Spirits are ranked second and Sturgeon is third in the men’s division.

Last year the lady Spirits repeated as bronze medallists and the Sturgeon males finished seventh overall as the recipients of the most sportsmanlike team trophy.

In the metro Edmonton premier conference finals last week at Ellerslie Rugby Park, the lady Spirits (4-1) knocked off the Bev Facey Falcons 10-7 and Sturgeon (5-1) thumped the 2010 champion St. Francis Xavier Rams 40-12 for the men’s title.

The premier women’s crown is the third in a row and the fifth in six years for the Spirits.

The premier men’s banner was Sturgeon’s second in three years.

Monday’s tier II (3A schools) playoff between the St. Albert Skyhawks and Beaumont Bandits to determine the metro Edmonton rep at the high school provincial rugby championships in Calgary was postponed because the referee failed to show up for the match.

It was re-scheduled for Tuesday in Sherwood Park, but the score was unavailable at press time.

In league play Beaumont was 3-1 and the Skyhawks finished 1-4 as the city conference finalists. Two of their losses were against the Paul Kane Blues: 15-10 in the last game before the playoffs and 15-0 in the city final.

The 20th Spirit of the North Kenyukai Koshukai and Takai is under way in St. Albert.

The week-long seminars and tournaments are being staged at the Desa School of Karate and Servus Credit Union Place.

The Desa School of Karate, which provides instruction in traditional Okinawan karate, is the host dojo for the biannual event under the direction of Sensei Manuel deSa, a sixth-degree black belt.

More than 30 Senseis from around the world are participating. Headlining the team of Master instructors is Narahido Shinjo, an eighth-degree black belt from Japan.
