The Hawks Basketball Academy (HBA) was the slam-dunk winner in the U13 girls’ playoff final in the Edmonton Youth Basketball Association (EYBA) spring league.
The 12th win in a row in league play by the undefeated Hawks was 55-34 against Southwest on Monday.
The Hawks’ overall record is 28-3. In tournament play they were victorious at the OLPH junior high tourney in Sherwood Park (3-0), Airdrie Spring Invitational (3-0) and the Rim Rocker in Stony Plain (3-0). They also finished second at the Swoosh tournament in Edmonton (2-1) last weekend.
The Hawks are made up of seven Grade 6 and four Grade 7 players. They are Sarah Dedrick, Stephanie Lussier, Marina Cain, Ashley Thomas, Allison Hunder, Kristin Kolthof, Sierra Gaulden, Alexis Anderson, Alexie Pusch, Jenell Desharnais and Jamie Bain.
The coaches are John Dedrick from the two-time reigning 3A provincial champion St. Albert Skyhawks and Andre Lussier, former head coach of the Canada Basketball Centre for Performance in Alberta.
HBA is offered in the Edmonton area to girls born from 1997 to 1999. Participants train twice per week with coaches that are experienced with the national team curriculum as well as the Canada Basketball Athlete Development Model.
HBA is an elite development program to expose players to a more global style of individual and team fundamentals that are essential in the development of excellent basketball players. It’s a program for girls based on the Train to Train stage as recommended by the Canadian Sport for Life Movement. The focus is on player development by spending most of the time on individual skill training and physical development rather than on team development. It’s designed to complement rather than replace the player’s school and/or community team. There is limited game play and HBA doesn’t participate in the EYBA winter league. Independent tournaments will be attended whenever possible.
This weekend the Hawks are entered in a Calgary tournament against U15 teams.

Nicole Stadnyk of St. Albert is among five ringette players in Canada to be awarded Agnes Jacks Scholarships.
Recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship towards post-secondary education and a scholarship award certificate recognizing their achievements.
The scholarships are presented to ringette players, coaches and/or officials who have demonstrated strong academic performance and a commitment to the sport of ringette.
Agnes Jacks, who passed away on April 1, 2005, was the widow of Sam Jacks, who invented the sport of ringette in 1963 in North Bay, Ont.
In 2008 Stadnyk played defence for Zone 5 Valta, the junior (14-15) Canadian ringette champions when nationals were staged in St. Albert. It marked the first time at nationals the junior host team didn’t lose a game en route to winning gold.
The Wabamun Sailing Club is launching a recruiting drive to bring new members into its fold.
About 10 per cent of the current membership hails from St. Albert.
The club, located four kilometres west of the Village of Wabamun, offers racing and recreational sailing as well as hosting regattas and various learn-to-sail programs for adults and children. The lessons are provided by the Northern Alberta Sailing College.
Club racing is held most weekends and Wednesday nights in June.
The club maintains four hi-powered safety boats that are on standby when the club is open and are deployed during racing and regatta events.
Members are expected to take boat safety courses, including rescue.
This year the club is operating five bring-a-friend days to encourage new people to take up the sport of sailing.
