The Senior B Miners (1-1) take on the Spruce Grove Slash (0-3-1) with a ball drop of 8 p.m. The Senior Miners are the defending Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League champions but have started the year slow with a minus-2 goal differential through two games.

The Junior A Miners (1-4) will also hit the rink with a start time of 8 p.m. at Performance Arena in Servus Credit Union Place. They will take on the Senior Edmonton Outlaws (1-1-1), who are currently positioned second in their respective league. The Miners, meanwhile, are placed last in their league with two points through five games.

Two former St. Albert Skyhawks received the chance to play football on their future home turf.

After linebacker Tanner Doll and defensive lineman Nathan Winchester helped lead the Skyhawks (3-4) to a semi-final appearance in Edmonton’s Metro Premier conference, they were named to Football Alberta’s Senior Bowl North team.

The game took place at McMahon stadium in Calgary with the South defeating the North 34-6.

Tanner Doll has signed on to play for the Calgary Dinos next year in the CIS.

The fourth annual Football Alberta Bantam Bowl also took place this weekend with the South beating the North 28-14 at Foote Field in Edmonton. Four St. Albert Minor Football products took the field, including Tyler Turner, Graeme Loerke and Jack Hanna.

The Bantam bowl features Grade 9 players from across the province.

The St. Albert High Skyhawks will be sending two players to compete for Team Alberta in the 2011 Football Canada Cup. Brandon Jennings and Nathan Mitchell were named to the team Tuesday after taking part in the under-18 selection camp from May 20 to 23.

The tournament takes place July 9 to 15 in Lethbridge and features teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, Nova Scotia, along with two from Ontario.

The Canada Cup was created in 1992 to develop minor talent within Canada and has launched the careers of numerous CIS and CFL players.

St. Albert native and 2011 University of Alberta soccer Panda Keshia Wallin will be heading to Shenzhen, China this year to compete in the 2011 Summer Universiade Games. Wallin, who was named the U of A’s top female athlete this year, patrolled the defensive corps for Canada’s 2009 Universiade team in Serbia which placed seventh.

Fellow St. Albert native Carleigh Miller will join Wallin on the squad after finishing the season on the CIS second team and posting a Panda team-high of 11 points in the 2011 campaign.

The games will take place August 12 to 23 and will feature teams from around the world at the university level of competition.
