The Sturgeon Spirits battled back from a 22-0 halftime deficit to knock off the Bev Facey Falcons in Monday’s metro Edmonton division two men’s rugby final at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
A’Tu’En Metallic scored two tries, Ian Griffiths, Lucas Friedrich and Brady Miller also crossed the try line and Kieran Campbell made three difficult kicks from near the touchline in the 31-27 thriller. It was 26-22 Sturgeon after three quarters.
It’s the seventh metro banner in team history and the first since winning the 2012 premier conference championship.
Sturgeon finished 6-0 (333 PF/54 PA) and Facey was 5-1 (243 PF/122 PA) in league play.
This weekend Sturgeon is the metro Tier 2 rep at provincials at Ellerslie.

Arinn Young of Legal was selected to the Wheelchair Basketball Canada women’s team for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games.
Young, 18 is the youngest player and the only Alberta hoopster on Canada’s roster for the Aug. 7 to 15 competition.
Canada is No. 1 in the world rankings as the reigning women’s champions and must finish amongst the top three teams in Toronto to punch its ticket to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Canada was the silver medallist at the 2007 and 2011 Parapan Am Games.
The five-foot-eight Young is a high school basketball product of the Morinville Lady Wolves who underwent multiple operations on her knees before switching from stand up to wheelchair basketball.
She is able to walk normally and is classified as a 4.5-point player with minimal disabilities.
Young made her wheelchair debut in 2011 and two years later helped the Edmonton Inferno win the Canadian women’s championship and was named a tournament all-star. She also earned all-star honours this year.
Young was also the female MVP at the 2014 junior nationals.
The Team Alberta player at the 2015 Canada Winter Games will compete for Canada at the U25 worlds this summer.
Tonight at 7 p.m. the St. Albert Cardinals visit the Spruce Grove White Sox in the NorWest Midget AAA Baseball League.
The Cardinals are 4-3 and the White Sox are 7-3 in league play.
Last week the Cardinals won two and lost three at the high-profile Langley tournament against top tier midget teams. They edged the White Rock Titans 6-3, lost 6-3 to the Langley Blaze, 2-1 in eight innings to the Victoria Mariners and 5-4 against the Okanagan Athletics before downing the BC Miners 7-2.
This weekend the 2014 Baseball Canada silver medallists and provincial midget Tier I champions are in Okotoks for games against Dawgs Black (3-0), Calgary Dinos (2-1) and Dawgs Red (8-4).
The St. Albert Impact division 1B men’s and women’s teams in the Edmonton District Soccer Association posted shutouts Sunday at Riel Park.
Adam Pinco was in net as the Impact men (4-1-1) pounded the Liberian Lone Stars 8-0 and Alyssa Luczak backstopped the Impact women (4-1) to a 2-0 decision against Sherwood Park Phoenix.
Alan Smith racked up four goals, Noah Boyko added two and Will Backhouse and Ramez Shehata also scored against the Lone Stars (1-4-1).
Alysha Elyk scored in the first half and U16 trialist Danielle Irwin kicked in the insurance marker against Phoenix (2-1-2).
Tonight at 6:30 p.m. the Impact women play ASC Inter (2-0-3) at Rollie Miles Park and the next Impact men’s match is June 10 versus Southwest United (1-2-2) at 6:30 p.m. at Riel Park.
The St. Albert Miners share first place in the senior B standings after sweeping last weekend’s games in Calgary.
The Miners raised their record to 6-1 in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League after beating the Calgary Mountaineers 10-5 and Calgary Raiders 11-7.
Last year’s provincial champions and Presidents’ Cup national bronze medallists are undefeated in four games after losing 9-8 to the Rockyview Knights (6-1) May 10 in Airdrie.
Saturday the Miners host the Knights at 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Matt Hiebert backstopped the Miners to both wins in Calgary while picking up five assists.
Captain Jordan Cornfield pumped in three goals against the Mountaineers (5-2), as the Miners scored the last five goals of the game, including three in the third period.
Owen Williams potted a pair and Aidan Inglis, Matt Andruchow, Brett Reynar, Pearce Just and Ryan Davis notched singles.
The Miners recorded five unanswered goals in the first against the Raiders (0-6) and led 8-4 after two periods.
Spencer Lee tallied three times and Nick Petz, Darren Kinnear, Marshall Just, Pearce Just, Derek Burak, Reynar, Williams and Davis also connected.
The third loss of the season for the St. Albert Crude against the provincial champion Red Deer Rampage was Saturday’s 7-6 decision at Akinsdale Arena.
It was 5-2 for the Rampage after 40 minutes.
The Rampage struck three times on the power play and once shorthanded in the win and the Crude scored twice with the man advantage and once on the penalty kill in the third.
Owen Feist, Brody Tod, Ben Holowaty, Cam Ellingson, Jacob Dion and Simon Hansen scored as the Crude suffered their third loss in four games.
The Rampage (7-0-1) are first and the Crude (3-7) are fourth in the junior B Tier I north division in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The next home game is Saturday versus the Okotoks Marauders (1-6) at 6 p.m. at Akinsdale.
