Nicole Langlois of St. Albert is one of three finalists in the Bring Home A Stanley Cup Champion contest.
As of Friday morning, Langlois trailed Kevin McNamara of North Gower, Ont. and Pamela Bonneau of Acton Vale, Que. in online voting at www.bringhomeachamp.ca. The “vote for me” videos by the three contestants are also online.
Voting continues until May 15. It’s open to Canadian residents, 13 years of age and older who have a PepsiCo Canada Connect ID Account.
The trio were selected from 800 entries across Canada. The winning prize is a home party sponsored by the maker of Pepsi, Lay’s Chips and Gatorade, and will include a visit by a former NHL star who will bring the Cup.
The following players from the St. Albert Sabres were selected in the Western Hockey League bantam draft Thursday.
Zach Gonek, defenceman, 13th overall (round one) by the Swift Current Broncos.
Jake Kohlhauser, defenceman, 30th overall (round two) by the Vancouver Giants.
Tyler Mrkonjic, forward, 82nd overall (round four) by the Tri-City Americans.
Patrick Gora, goalie, 179th overall (round nine) by the Regina Pats.
The St. Albert foursome also played for the second-place Northwest Sharks at last month’s Alberta Cup. Gora was named to the tournament’s all-star team.
Mrkonjic was also the recipient of the John Reid Memorial Award for heart and hustle at the St. Albert tournament in January. It’s presented to the Sabres’ player who exemplifies hard work, talent, determination and sportsmanship.
Graham Plomp and Korey Matte of the Dynamyx Gymnastic Club of St. Albert turned in medal-winning performances at the Western Canadian Championships last weekend in Grande Prairie.
Plomp received silver in the national open men’s team competition. He was also awarded gold on floor and vault and silver on pommel and parallel bars in the event finals.
Last year Plomp was the first Dynamyx member in club history to record podium finishes at westerns with gold on pommel and bronze on vault and parallel bars. He plans to try out for Team Alberta for the Western Canada Summer Games, running Aug. 5 to 14 in Kamloops.
Matte picked up silver in the level 4 men’s team competition in his first trip to westerns. He tied for silver on vault and placed sixth on rings in the event finals.
The midget AAA St. Albert Cardinals are up to bat this weekend at Legion Memorial Park.
Today they host Strathmore at noon and 3:30 p.m. and Red Deer on Sunday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Last Sunday in Strathmore the Cardinals lost 6-1 to the home team and 17-7 to Okotoks. It was the first time on the field for the St. Albert team coached by Chamara (CJ) Jayasekera of New Zealand.

The RunWild Leading Edge Marathon on May 15 is designed for everyone of any level. It consists of a 42-kilometre marathon, 21.1-km half marathon walk/run, 10-km walk/run, five-km walk/run and the WildOnes Marafun for kids.
Start times in front of St. Albert Place on St. Anne Street are 7 a.m. (marathon), 7:30 a.m. (marathon walk/run) and 7:45 a.m. (10-km and five-km walk/run). The WildOnes Marafun begins at 11:30 a.m. at Millennium Park, the finish line for all the races. The awards ceremony goes at noon.
The inaugural event will not only commemorate the 150th anniversary of St. Albert, but will also help raise money for the Edmonton-based Zebra Child Protection Centre. The website is www.zebracentre.ca.

The Hawks Basketball Academy (HBA) is holding an information night Wednesday for girls born in 1997, 1988 and 1999 who want to improve their basketball skills.
It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Albert Catholic High School and includes a 90-minute practice and a 30-minute question and answer period with free pizza.
It’s an opportunity to have fun on the court, test your skills, see the HBA coaches in action and chat with parents and players of the Hawks.
