Sturgeon County resident Jelena Mrdjenovich scored a six-round technical decision over defending champion Melissa Hernandez of Miami to win the World Boxing Council featherweight title Friday at the Shaw Conference Centre.
Mrdjenovich, 30, persevered after suffering a two-inch gash high on her forehead when the boxers knocked heads in the last minute of round two.
While bleeding heavily Mrdjenovich dropped Hernandez midway through the fifth round and in the sixth tattooed her opponent with a flurry of punches before the referee ended the scheduled 10-round main event on KO Boxing’s Double Jeopardy card.
Scores were 58-55, 58-55 and 57-56 for Mrdjenovich in her first win in three bouts with Hernandez.
Last September Mrdjenovich lost a 10-round decision to Hernandez in Edmonton.
Mrdjenovich, a 10-year-pro, is 29-9-1 after the win. Hernandez is 18-4-3.

The Edmonton Auroras placed sixth at the Canadian Espoir Championships last weekend in Ottawa with three St. Albert members on the synchronized swim team.
Kate Chernoff, Sydney Heigh and Ryann Veran of St. Albert were joined by Taylor Laing, Gwen McGuire, Kendra Melnychuk, Allison Mercier, Amy Parker and Angela Zhou on the 13-15 age-group team.
Friday they placed seventh in the team preliminary event and in Saturday’s finals pulled ahead of Dollard Synchro of Quebec for the first top-sixth placing at nationals by the Auroras in almost 10 years.
The Auroras executed their routine at a higher level by being sharper and more precise in their movements to climb above Dollard. They received higher marks from the judges for technical merit, which includes the synchronization, execution and difficulty components.
The theme and music the Auroras used is what you would hear at soccer, football and baseball games.
The team event featured 23 teams and 207 athletes.
The Auroras advanced to nationals by placing second at provincials and sixth at the national qualifier.
