The St. Albert Skyhawks fly into Tuesday’s city conference final after recording their sixth shutout in metro Edmonton high school women’s soccer.
Game time is 4 p.m. between the Skyhawks and St. Francis Xavier Rams at the Victoria Soccer Club.
The last city championship for the Skyhawks was in 2010.
The Skyhawks (37 GF/2 GA) and Rams (40 GF/4 GA) are both undefeated at 7-0.
The Paul Kane Blues (4-2-1) are the only team to fill the net against the Skyhawks. They tallied twice in the 4-2 loss May 21.
In semifinal action Thursday the Skyhawks blanked the Holy Trinity Trojans 3-0 at Eldorado field and the Rams downed the Paul Kane 3-1 in Edmonton.
For the fourth-straight year Ty Lindeman of St. Albert has been selected to play for Canada at the Pan American Junior Badminton Championships.
The tournament runs July 21 to 28 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Last year in Sherwood Park, Lindeman medalled for the first time at the Pan American tournament. He teamed up with Takeisha Wang of Edmonton for silver in U17 mixed doubles.
This year the Grade 10 Paul Kane High School student will play for medals in U17 singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Lindeman, 15, was recently honoured with the sportsmanship award at junior nationals in Saskatoon.
He returned home from nationals with three medals – silver in mixed doubles with Wang and doubles with Austin Bauer of Calgary and bronze in singles in the U16 division.
Lindeman’s previous medal haul was silver in U16 mixed doubles last year and in U14 singles and doubles in 2011.
In the Badminton Canada U16 rankings released March 4, Lindeman was No. 1 in singles and in doubles with Bauer and No. 2 in mixed doubles with Wang, who is also No. 2 in girls’ singles.
St. Albert defenceman Josh Mahura is among 42 bantam-age players across Canada selected to attend the third annual Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp.
Hosted by National Hockey League Players’ Association under the leadership of former NHL player Gary Roberts, the invitation only five-day camp runs Aug. 6 to 10 in Mississauga, Ont. and will conclude with an intersquad game that will be broadcast on TSN.
Ten players are from Alberta.
Mahura, captain of the bantam AAA St. Albert Sabres last season, was selected by the Red Deer Rebels in the second round (36th overall) as the ninth defenceman taken in the Western Hockey League bantam draft.
The St. Albert Stars make their Alberta Football League debut Friday against the Edmonton Stallions. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Clarke Park.
The Stars were originally scheduled to play the Edmonton Army team today at Johnny Bright Park, but the Edmonton Garrison team folded.
Last weekend in exhibition action the Stars defeated the Central Alberta Buccaneers 29-27 in a penalty-filled affair in Lacombe.
The AFL also consists of the Lloydminster Vandals, Calgary Wolfpack, Calgary Gators and the Grande Prairie Drillers.
Last year the Vandals beat the Wolfpack for the AFL championship and in the national final they knocked off the Toronto Titans 25-19 in the Border City.
The AFL, founded in 1984, uses Canadian rules and players are as young as 18 and some are 50-plus.
