The bantam AAA St. Albert Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak in Wednesday’s mercy-rule victory over SEEBA.
The Red Birds banged out 21 hits in the 15-4 decision in six innings at Goldstick Park.
Logan Blumhagen paced the attack with four hits and Zach Froment and Evan Bourassa had three hits apiece.
Davis Pratt went the distance on the mound while striking out eight and walking one to record his third win of the month.
The Cardinals improved to 5-5 in league play and 11-5 overall. SEEBA is 2-8.
Last weekend, the Cardinals suffered losses of 6-1, 7-1 and 8-4 against the East Central Bulls (7-2) at Legion Memorial Park.
This weekend the Cardinals have three games on tap in Okotoks against Dawgs Red (1-7).
Drop goals decided Tuesday’s semifinal between the Paul Kane Blues and Harry Ainlay Titans in metro Edmonton division two women’s rugby.
Knotted at 20 apiece after four quarters, as per league rules, the playoff went straight to drop kicks from the 22-metre line and only the 15 players on the pitch at the end of regulation time participated.
After each team made one kick in the opening round of five, the rest of the players were cycled through the sudden-death format before returning to the first five and the Titans’ second kicker split the uprights on the 17th kick for the win.
In the fourth quarter, the Blues scored on their first possession to lead 20-15. The Titans poured on the pressure and the Blues were forced to kick out of trouble several times in a row and even held them up in the try area from scoring before a tired defence surrendered the equalizer with about two minutes to play.
It was the first loss for the Blues after four wins in pool A. The Titans finished 3-2 overall after losing Thursday’s final 14-12 to the Jasper Place Rebels (5-1).
Last year, the Blues (5-1) defeated the Titans 36-24 in the final for their first metro banner since 2008 and the sixth in team history.
Meanwhile, the Paul Kane men dropped a 19-15 decision to the Bev Facey Falcons in Wednesday’s division two semifinal in Sherwood Park.
Paul Kane finished 4-2 and Facey is 5-0 going into Monday’s final against the 5-0 Sturgeon Spirits at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. Sturgeon is also the metro league’s Tier 2 rep for provincials next weekend at Ellerslie.
The U10A St. Albert Angels outscored the opposition 51-23 in four victories as the Buck Schrader Memorial Softball Tournament champions last weekend in Edmonton.
Kailyn Knowlton and Kenzee Hope homered in the final as the Angels defeated the Enoch Tomahawks 13-2. Kiara Charchuk and Robyn Broke split time on the mound. They also pitched in the previous game, 13-4 over the McLeod Royals.
The Angels opened the tournament with a 13-9 win against a formidable Sherwood Park squad.
The next game featured a strong pitching performance by Emily Harty in the 12-8 decision against the Anselmo A’s. Harty kept the Angels in contention as the A’s pitcher kept the Angels off-balance with a tricky changeup through three innings. In the fourth, Ava Roth slugged a home run to tie it at seven and in the fifth the Angels exploded for five runs to secure the victory.
