A third period outburst by the St. Albert Miners buried the Spruce Grove Slash in Wednesday’s home opener at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
The 2012 provincial senior B finalists outscored the visitors 5-2 in the final 20 minutes to win 14-11.
Jordan Cornfield led all runners with four goals and three assists as the Miners improved to 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Cornfield’s third goal of the game with 4:28 to play snapped an 11-all deadlock.
Josh Sullivan, Steve Tessarola, Chris Schmidt and rookie Chad Gendall tallied twice and Nick Petz and Graedon Cornfield fired one goal apiece.
Period scores were 6-4 Miners after the first and 9-9 after the second.
The Miners capitalized four times on the power play and Schmidt converted a shorthanded opportunity.
The Slash struck three times with the man advantage against Miners’ netminder Grant MacLeod.
This weekend the Miners travel south to play the Calgary Mountaineers Saturday at noon at Stu Peppard Arena in Calgary and the Okotoks Raiders on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Okotoks.
The next home game is May 22 against the Slash at 8 p.m.
This weekend the junior A St. Albert Miners made their season debut on the road.
Today the Miners run the floor against the Calgary Junior Mountaineers at 4 p.m. at Stu Peppard Arena.
Sunday’s game against the Okotoks Junior Raiders starts at 3 p.m.
The first home game for the Miners is May 25 against the Mountaineers at 2:30 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
Last year in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League the Miners finished fourth out of four teams at 3-14-1 and were eliminated in the semifinals by Okotoks for the second-straight year.
The Bellerose Bulldogs are off to a roaring start in metro Edmonton high school premier women’s rugby after blasting the Paul Kane Blues 50-7 Thursday for their second win in the condensed fixtures.
Bellerose outscored Paul Kane 38-5 in the first half at the Pirates Rugby Club.
Nicole Sarafinchan and Brianna Sinkler’s kicking exploits paced the Bellerose attack.
Nichole Schlemko and Jennifer Brinton scored tries for Paul Kane.
On Monday, Bellerose beat the Beaumont Bandits 20-17 to kick off the season.
Last year Beaumont ended Bellerose’s undefeated season with a 24-5 win in the city conference final.
The next match for Bellerose is Tuesday against the 2012 premier champion Bev Facey Falcons. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. at Lynn Davies Rugby Park in Sherwood Park.
Paul Kane also scrums down Tuesday against Beaumont at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
Paul Kane is 1-1 this season, highlighted by a rare victory against the Sturgeon Spirits.
On Monday four players recorded tries in the 22-7 decision. After the forward pack punched in the opening try for Paul Kane, Alex Hildebrant, Mairi McEwan, Nicole Wright crossed the try line.
Scrum-half Daniela Dorado and captain Mackenzie Stata also contributed to the team’s success.
Paul Kane had mustered only five points in total against Sturgeon since winning the 2008 premier title.
