Graham Plomp and Korey Matte of the Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert turned in medal-winning performances at westerns with Team Alberta last weekend in Winnipeg.
Plomp, 19, made the finals in all six events in the national open category to finish first in the all-around competition.
The Paul Kane High School graduate was awarded gold for vault, silver on the pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar and bronze in floor. He also placed fifth in rings.
Matte, 14, made the final in floor in the national youth category and tied for the silver medal. He finished 12th all-around.
It was the third westerns for the Grade 9 William D. Cuts School student and his first appearance as a national youth gymnast.
Plomp and Matte also contributed to Alberta’s silver medal showing in the national open/youth team event.
Up next for Plomp is nationals, May 17 to 25 at Carleton University in Ottawa.
The St. Albert Cardinals got off to a flying start in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League by sweeping Sunday’s doubleheader in Okotoks.
The Red Birds defeated the hometown Dawgs White 10-4 and 8-7.
In the opening game the Cardinals scored four runs on four hits in their first at-bat and after five innings lead 7-3.
The Cardinals out-hit the Dawgs 10-9.
First baseman Gray Symington batted cleanup and cracked two triples and drove home three runs while going 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Evan Loranger, the leadoff batter and centrefielder, and shortstop/pitcher Mat Brisson, the No. 2 Cardinal in the batting order, had two hits apiece.
Starting pitcher Tanner Karpinski struck-out four and walked one while tossing a three-hitter over three innings.
In the second game the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-3 lead after three innings and pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-5.
Triffon Tatarin, the right-fielder and No. 3 hitter, stroked a single and triple and Symington doubled twice.
Jake Fischer tripled and had two RBIs while splitting time as the third base and designated hitter.
Jackson Wark started on the mound and twirled a five-hitter over five innings. He fanned five batters, walked three and gave up three runs.
Tonight the Cardinals are in Spruce Grove to play the White Sox at 6:30 p.m.
This weekend the Cardinals host SEEBA 1 in Saturday’s doubleheader at noon and 3 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park, and Sunday they play SEEBA 2 on at noon in Edmonton.
The St. Albert Impact men are back on the pitch in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Last week in the premier division the Impact 1 team and KC Trojans battled to a 1-1 draw at Riel Recreation Park.
Thursday at 8:30 p.m. the Impact host Victoria at the Riel turf field.
Last year the Impact finished fifth in the premier table at 7-7-2, with 32 goals scored and 32 against.
The Impact 2 team kicked off its division 1B fixtures with a 2-1 loss to Juventus at the ESA Complex last week.
The next game is tonight against AC Milan 2 at 7 p.m. at the ESA fields.
Last year the Impact placed fifth out of nine teams at 7-5-4, with a goal differential of plus-nine.
The Impact Rangers made its 1A division debut Monday against the Rising Stars, but the score was unavailable from the Riel turf field.
The Rangers are at home Monday against Croatia Hajduk at 8:30 p.m.
Last year in premier the Rangers finished ninth out of nine teams at 1-12-3, with a league-worst goal differential of minus 37, and were relegated into division 1A.
