Ten football players from St. Albert are among 114 selected to attend the Team Alberta final selection camp May 10 to 12 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.

The players were selected from talent identification camps in Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer over the past two weekends.

The program is for players born in 1996 or 1997.

Competing for spots on the provincial team for the July 15 to 22 Football Canada Cup in Moncton, N.B. is quarterback Keith Zyla, linebacker John Brouse and defensive back Rory O’Donovan of the 2012 Tier III provincial finalist St. Albert High Skyhawks, receiver Tyler Turner, defensive lineman Liam Ryan, linebackers Greg Fleming and Graeme Loerke and defensive back Nolan Florence of the Paul Kane Blues and defensive linemen Jack Hanna and Jacob Neuls of the Bellerose Bulldogs.

Ryan, Fleming, Loerke and Hanna are playing midget spring league football for the St. Albert Storm this season.

Four players from the St. Albert 49ers will huddle up with the north all-stars at the fifth annual Football Alberta Bantam Bowl.

Quarterback Brendan Guy, receiver Corbin Stewart, offensive lineman Zach Dreger and defensive back Arjun Basahti will represent the 2012 Capital District Minor Football Association’s Tier 3 bantam champions and provincial north finalists at the May 20 all-star game at Foote Field.

Two camps in April were used to select 40 graduating Grade 9 players for both the north and south teams.

The Bantam Bowl runs every year in rotation with the Alberta Summer Games’ football program.

Jack Hanna, Graeme Loerke and Tyler Turner represented the St. Albert Fury at the 2011 Bantam Bowl.

Stewart is one of the top receivers for the St. Albert Storm in the midget spring league.

J.P. Leblanc of the Sturgeon Spirits was selected the most valuable player in the metro Edmonton premier men’s conference in high school basketball.

The high-scoring Grade 12 point guard drained 41, 23 and 44 points in three games at the O’Leary Spartans tournament this year and broke tournament records for the single-game high total and most points in three games.

Leblanc is the third Sturgeon player in six years to be receive metro league MVP honours. Issac Kaup was the city conference pool B recipient in 2008 and 2009 and Matt Kaup was the 2011 premier winner.

Legion Memorial Park in St. Albert is among a number of venues for the 2013 Canadian Oldtimers Baseball Championships.

More than 40 teams from across the country will compete in the 35-plus, 44-plus and 50-plus age divisions May 1 to 5.

Games will also be played at Spruce Grove, Telus Field and other Edmonton diamonds.

The St. Albert Senior Cardinals in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association will swing the bat at nationals in the 35-plus division.

The defending champions are the Woodslee Orioles in 35-plus, Oakville Golden A’s in 44-plus and Dufferin Simcoe Rockers in 50-plus.

The first oldtimers nationals was 1993.
